from the the Provincial Administrator, Mr. RA Kaiyun and Chairman of the Provincial Disaster Committee
//
I wish to provide an update to every one engaged in managing the Flood Disaster Challenge in Western Province.
Since my travel from Daru to Port Moresby, the following steps have been undertaken to bring the Western Province Flood Disaster Situation to the attention of the National Government.
1. The Western Province Flood Disaster Situation Report was presented to the Director-General of National Disaster Centre;
2. Copies of the Report were also circulated to the Governor for Western Province; MD of Ok Tedi Mining Limited, CEO of PNGSDP, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited, ExxonMobil and Secretary to the Department of Defence.
3. Responses and work in progress.
▪︎ OTML has responded and will continue to assist in managing the Flood Disaster in the province.
▪︎SDP has already started to arrange food relief supplies and will deliver them. Their Western Queen will transport some ofthe relief supplies in some areas. They will also work with OTML/OTDF in some areas especially those affected areas within the CMCA Region.
▪︎ The National Government through the Department of Defence and National Disaster Coordinator have started to inform donor agencies to start drawing their attention to the Flood Disaster in Western Province. We met with the Secretary for Defence today and work has progressed.
There will be some direction next week on where the assistance will come from and the type of assistance it will provide. In our letter the NDC is to have a full scale Assessment conducted on the Flood Disaster to ascertain the 'degree of impact' and what level and type of Relief Assistance is required for the people affected by the Flood Disaster in Western Province.
As we continue to progress on distribution of food supplies, there must work on data collection to assist in compiling the 'Flood Disaster Assessment Report'. I want to request all the District Administrators, and Local Level Government Managers to update any information on the impact of the Flood Disaster for us to inform the National Government through the Secretary for Defence and Director-General of NDC.
With the work already in progress I wish to request full cooperation from every one in managing this Disaster affecting the people in Western Province.
Robert A Kaiyun,
PA/Chairman - Provincial Disaster Committee
