Tears in Heaven: A regret from the soul 🕊
In March 1991, Eric Clapton's life changed forever. His son, Conor, just 4, was tragically m/u/r/1//o after falling from an apartment window in New York City. Clapton was devastated; the pain of losing his son engulfed him in a deep sadness, one that seemed impossible to overcome.
In the midst of his grief, Clapton found in music a way to channel his pain. Thus was born Tears in Heaven, a heartbreaking ballad that became an anthem for those who have faced the loss of a loved one. The lyrics, written alongside Will Jennings, reflect on the most intimate questions that arise in moments of loss:
"Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?" "I must be strong and move on because I know I don't belong here in heaven."
"Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on, 'cause I know I don't belong here in heaven".
Each verse is imbued with love, melancholy and hope. Eic Clapton not only expressed his grief, but also his longing for a reunion with his loved one beyond this world.
Released in 1992, the song quickly climbed to the top of the charts. He won three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, although for Clapton, those awards were secondary. For him, Tears in Heaven was his way of paying tribute to Conor, expressing the inexpressible, and finding some peace in his suffering.
After its release in subsequent interviews, Clapton confessed that he stopped playing the song live because he relived the pain too much.
