Fantastic morning in Kuaotunu with the Kuaotunu Dark Sky Trust celebrating Matariki. An excellent turnout of around 75 people which is fantastic for 5:00am on a Saturday morning. Alastair, Paul and Ed were on hand to give expert guidance and though the cloud covered up the Matariki constellation and much of the Milky Way we were able to get detailed visuals of the Moon and in the southern skies Alpha Centari our closest neighbouring star. Once again the sausages on the BBQ cooked up by Paul and Hilary were fantastic. Best sausages in the universe! Had a great chat to Paul Cook about the progress of the Dark Sky accreditation on the Kuaotunu peninsula and will give an update in the next edition of the MBP.

Roimata Taimana Exhibition

Richardsons Showroom - Kūaotunu

Friday 28 June - Sunday 30 June

Local artist Roimata Taimana will be exhibiting in Kūaotunu over the weekend of Matariki. It’s been a while since Roimata has displayed locally and it will be a welcome homecoming. His most recent shows have been in Queenstown and Kapanga/Coromandel Town, and while Roimata has loved traveling to showcase his art, there’s no place like home and he is excited to show what he has been working on.

The sales of Roimata’s art are going to a very special cause. Roimata’s whanau are in the very early stages of building papakāinga on their ancestral land. For years, Roimata has been painting and drawing images of what the pā sites around Kūaotunu would have looked like hundreds of years ago. His pictures show palisades, pou, whare and sometimes glowing campfires. With the proposed papakāinga, Roimata is a step closer to living inside one of his beautiful images.

Matariki Stargazing

Kūaotunu Domain - 29 June 2024

With commentary from local night sky guides, you will be able to watch other planets and stars with the help of large astronomical telescope and binoculars, and learn more about the Dark Sky Community project.

The black night sky above Kūaotunu has a unique connection to both Māori and European history – guiding the earliest Māori navigators and inspiring Cook’s voyage for observation of the Transit of Mercury. The community project aims to preserve this exquisite deep darkness forever, for our enjoyment but also because it will be a base to build an understanding and appreciation of the astronomical, cultural and historical aspects of the stars. And how important the deep darkness is for all living things in our environment, people included.

Commentary from two experienced guides

Great to see a couple of dozen hardy souls brave the elements for the Matarangi Mid-Winter Swim this morning.

Everyone earned their hot chocolate and shot of Port to revive themselves after their plunge.

Here are a few picks taken at the time. We will have more to report in the next edition coming out later in the week prior to Matariki.
