Pre-Covid we might have asked, remember QR codes? Today, they’re everywhere.
For us, their ability to translate and share further information makes them useful to extend the exhibition experience beyond the physical. Recently, we used QR codes to provide a solution where internet access was not available in an exhibition space:
The Paint Phila interactive imagines ancient Greek art in colour. When visitors touch elements of the artwork, it activates the marble to change colour and provide details about the object. If you hold down on an area, the colours become changeable and customisable, creating your very own ancient artwork!
Our client, the National Museum of Australia, wanted visitors to see and share their creations online. But without internet access, we had to come up with something else…our team encoded ‘on-the-fly’ the colour metadata from the interactive into a URL within a QR code which would display at the end of each person’s session. A visitor could scan the code, open their browser, and then save or share their work to friends and whānau.
The Ancient Greeks exhibit is soon to go on tour where once again the QR code comes in handy for the travelling exhibition and its potential lack of data network access.
Check out the Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes exhibit currently open at the National Museum of Australia and soon touring Australasia before coming to Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Last year right before Christmas - the Ship to Shore exhibition opened in the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston, Texas. It’s a unique immersive experience that has visitors follow in the footsteps of early immigrants arriving to the US in the 1880s.
This great Exhibit Explainer from our client the Galveston Historical Foundation is a quick rundown of what to expect on site and showcases the membership card system which we had a hand in creating for the GHF network of visitor experiences.

“A powerful language is the core of any great experience – the language of design, of a great story, of the gods and ancestors.”
Connecting with a visitor experience project means understanding te reo me ona tikanga. At Manea we had the privilege of learning whakapapa from kaumatua and master orators.
From the hautū E Kau Ki Te Tai E, to karakia and moteatea written into scripts, and correct pronunciation of te reo o Ngāphuhi, we owe thanks to the generosity of John Klaricich, Hone Taimona, Joy Ngaropo-Hau, Horo Horomana, and many others.
For checking each kupu and its nuances were accurate for Te Wahapū o Hokianga - ka nui te mihi ki a koutou.

Gibson Group designed and produced 6 interactive experiences and a large screen projection for the award-winning Western Australia Museum - Boola Bardip. We had some of the team in Perth visit our work and put something together to share! 🤗
The content ranged from exploring Western Australia’s war history through map exploration, understanding your point of view on migration, how automated systems are impacting the future and the importance of the Indian Ocean to culture and history.

Western Australia Museum Interactives
Last year we created, designed and delivered interactives for the WA Museum Boola Bardip in Perth, completely remote from Wellington.
Friends from home, if you get to Western Australia, Boola Bardip is a must-do (Take pictures for us 😆).
How To Spot A Cult
In 2009 we filmed a two-part doco called 🎬How To Spot A Cult.
The series explores groups like Exclusive Brethren, Gloriavale, Scientology and International Church of Christ and was made with the courageous participation of ex-members who shared their stories.
We can't help but wonder what the 2021 version might be like...
Both eps are available to watch on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.com/How-To-Spot-A-Cult/dp/B07DMQQ2LK

DIGIE - Opening Day Selfies
Happy Birthday DIGIE! 🥂🎉
Today marks the anniversary of the opening of the Digital Information Gateway in El Paso or DIGIE! at the El Paso Museum of History.
Covid has forced the temporary closure of the installation, so we are working hard with our friends in El Paso to take the full touch wall experience onto an upgraded digie.org website.
DIGIE is a celebration, archive, and living time capsule of El Paso and its residents. To celebrate, we thought we’d share some of the first visitor interactions with the selfie function on the wall.
Manea - Opening Day
Manea Footprints of Kupe is not a museum. It is an iwi-led cultural experience we are honoured to be part of.
Manea is an all-encompassing attraction - a live guiding and performance, purpose-made carvings, an interactive gallery, and a spectacular immersive 4D theatre experience.
