In this wāhanga Dr Jessica Hutchings travels to Taranaki to meet Pounamu Skelton and her whānau, who have returned to live communally on their ancestral whēnua.
Pounamu and her parents have collectively purchased this land to be able to grow food and to be able to teach whānau how to grow food, but also to set it up for all of the generations to come.
Today three generations are saving and swapping seeds, planting and harvesting, and sharing with their whānau and local community.

Directed by Jess Feast and developed in collaboration with Dr Jessica Hutchings, the series explores the diverse ways in which Food and Soil Sovereignty is being realised in Aotearoa by Māori growers and communities around the motu.
In each episode Dr Jessica Hutchings visits Hua Parakore whānau to learn how and why our current industrialised food system is broken, and the role Māori Food and Soil Sovereignty has in creating meaningful solutions to the climate crisis and food insecurity.
This project has been a labour of love, with filming beginning in spring 2022, and we want to acknowledge the generous participants and amazing crew who shared their knowledge, time, and energy.
