Some of our work on the first film included these horse head replacements that required matching muscle twitches with frame-by-frame warping, fine hair extractions and scale gags. This enabled Wētā FX artists to perfectly match CG Urakis to live horses, adapting lens characteristics to the plate.

Our work on NYAD Movie includes reserving as much of the original plates as possible; however, in most shots, we had to replace the water entirely with CG apart from some refractions. The swell did not exist on any of the plates, so we had to move the kayaks, the swimmers, and the boat individually to match the water’s CG movements, so everything in the scene was shown to be moving up and down with the motion of the water. Wētā FX’s work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 focuses on the Arête, a colossal, ruby-covered spaceship, first appearing as a 300m high skyscraper on Counter-Earth. We also worked on the destruction created on Counter Earth as the Arête lifts off, comprising FX and matte painting.

Wētā FX’s work on the CG-heavy Transformers: Rise of the Beasts begins with the film’s opening scenes, introducing then subsequently destroying the Maximal’s home planet, before picking back up in the high-octane third act battle, which takes place inside a volcanic crater.
