I had a wonderful time at the Photobook NZ book fair in Te Papa yesterday. So many beautiful and wonderful books. I bought some to add to my collection. (oops) I enjoyed all the conversations with the photographers & publishers who were very generous with their time and many had travelled from the other side of the world to be in Wellington for this event. The fair gets better every time, and that’s not all - there are also numerous talks and workshops happening the whole weekend. Fabulous. Well done!!

Teamwork!

I finally had the opportunity to team up with my friend
Bradley Francis from Broadmedia. I was given the task of filming a handful of teleprompter piece-to-cams in only a few hours, and in a city renowned for its wind. Bradley turned up with his teleprompter kit and helped make the shoot run smooth as.

When Andy Carruthers first told me about his idea and vision for this film in 2022, I fell in love with it straight away.

The Tararua mountain range in New Zealand can be tough and unforgiving place, but it's also a rewarding and incredibly beautiful place that has captured the imagination of generations.

This film explores why people are drawn to the area time and time again and shares some of the stories.

It was an honour to edit and produce this film with Andy. A personal highlight of my filmmaking career.

Editing video is easy if...

you use the spacebar.

New to editing?

The spacebar is the hub of the operation

the master control key

PLAY ➡️ PAUSE

Then CUT

There are 1000 ways to make a cut

BUT the spacebar is how you FIND and FEEL your edits before cutting

It takes time and patience to learn - but makes editing a breeze.

Sure, AI can chop out gaps etc, but great editing is done by humans.

How should you react if you receive feedback like this?

"I initially approached Hans about photography for a new website I was creating for my pharmacy. What we got from Hans instead was so much more than photos.

Hans sat down with us and really got himself immersed in our journey with the business and in particular, Michele's journey as she went from working and serving the community and then taking over the business herself. Hans saw the humanity of the story behind our customers, Michele's journey and the pharmacy team's care and service to our community.

Michele and I felt that Hans is everything you would want from a professional in his industry. He is patient and creates a supportive atmosphere, both in interviews and on camera. He listens first and considers his clients before offering potential solutions or next steps. He wants you be involved and comfortable. Hans brings a positive energy about him and Michele really appreciated that when he came into our workplace for shooting.

It's one thing to make someone feel comfortable and engaged with 1 on 1. It's another thing entirely to make a diverse group of people, of varying levels of camera shyness, like our team feel comfortable all at once. Hans did it with ease!

Michele and I both felt that the service and finished product that Hans gave us was high quality. He communicated every step of the way and delivered exactly what he promised and on time! We would use his services again in a heartbeat!"

This was one of my favourite projects from 2023.

What we delivered:

A full photography package
A 2.30min film
3 x 30" social cuts

If are a small business and would like to create a stunning media package, send me a message anytime. 🤝

Filmmaking VS videography, what is the difference?

Filmmaking:

Creatively mixing imagery and audio with expert storytelling to trigger an emotional response.

Videography:

Everything else.

Never underestimate the power of tapping into human emotion.

Bloopers usually come later.

However, I’m creating a special video for LinkedIn and want to share some of the fun and silliness we got up to this week.

I can’t thank Loyd Gorme Doron enough for his participation.

Loyd is a talented young filmmaker with a crazy number of accolades and he gave up HIS time to do some crazy filming with yours truly!

Looking forward to sharing the full video in coming weeks.

Until then.... 😬

I kick-started my business making films for a Muay Thai gym in Wellington, Zealand: MTI Wellington

Over the course of 2-3 years we made a heaps of films together, and a lot of supplementary projects, such as home workouts for the covid lockdown.

They were always a heap of fun to work with and each video project was unique.

I am always grateful for the time we spent working together🙏

This video is titled "I love Muay Thai"

5 random occurrences that turbo charged my career:

1. A bit of gossip
Via the town grapevine, I learned of an old primary school friend becoming a news camera operator. I was slaving away, sweaty shirt and tie, in a department store. This news was a bolt of lightning. I was actively passionate about photography. Could this be a career?

2. The article.
I read an article saying George Lucas was again breaking new ground by filming the next Star Wars instalment 100% on digital cameras. Wait - I love the movies! Why don’t I buy a little digital video camera and make a film? I won’t have the same budget as Lucas but I'll make something…

3. Coffee convo part 1
I escaped the department store and was working in a little photography store printing films. Over our morning cup of delicious instant, my workmate confessed he was interested in learning how to edit. I was filming a documentary with my new camera but had no idea about operating editing software, and now I had an editor! (I owe this guy a lot)

4. Coffee convo part 2
I was telling the barista at my favorite cafe about my documentary. She asked if I had heard about the 2 year television production course. No? I hadn't even considered anything like that. That same week I applied and submitted my documentary. I was beyond excited to be fast-tracked into year 2.

5. Abandoned!
As part of this course, we worked at the local TV station where students had chance to make their own news stories. The student journalist I was working with recorded her scripted voice-over then just took off. I was forced to edit her story alone. I showed our story to the station news producer. They loved it, and to my shocked surprise, it went into their live-to-air bulletin.

Epilogue.
A month or so later on New Year's day, I’m in the countryside with my best mate trekking alongside a river and my phone rings. It was the manager of that news station. Their camera operator had just quit and he asked if I wanted the position.

You bet.

9 years later in 2012, fate would place my old primary school friend and me together in the same newsroom.

What random occurrences brought you to today?

"God damn son that s**t was LIT! Finally got around to watching it last night. Wow! Really, really impressed! That’s Jimmy Chin level awesomeness!! Well done! .....Thanks again for sharing this with me. Man I enjoyed that."

The film "Taraua S-K: 60 Years in the making" has been rolling around different venues, clubs and festivals in New Zealand collecting some wonderful reviews, and is now being taken to the world.

I was very privileged to work on this film as editor with director Andy Carruthers, earlier this year. A 2023 highlight for Hans Weston Films!

The film has been entered the film into the Banff Mountain Film Festival, this is one of the largest and most prestigious in the world.

It has also been entered the Kendal Mountain Festival in the UK and Andy is looking for festivals in the US.

Cross your fingers, we will hear back at the end of September on Banff.

The film is now streaming on Vimeo, buy a copy from the link below.

Andy also recently appeared on the podcast "Dirt Church radio" talking about the conception and evolution of the film. ( below)

DIY video? Is it really worth it?

I've noticed a lot of DIY video the last few years. All with varying results.

I'm not talking about recording yourself speaking to your phone. Anyone can do that. I'm talking about :

- video production
- filmmaking
- storytelling.
..anything where you need to compose shots, edit and craft something.

I totally understand the appeal of DIY. Filmmaking and video production is a fun fascinating thing to learn.

It can't be that hard.

We all carry cameras around and access to editing software is easy as walking to the dairy to buy an ice cream.

In fact it's better and easier than that, edit software is free.

Why hire someone when you can do it yourself?

Why waste money?

A smart business knows where to cut costs right?

Also, there's some truely incredible AI tools out there too. Heck, even filmmakers are using them to expedite many processes. (and they also have a solid knowledge behind it)

The possibilities and potential are all there for amazing DIY video, however in my experience and observations the results are doing more harm than good.

Maybe you work for an amazing company, or have created a trusted brand, perhaps built a solid business that you've poured your heart and soul into and then you commit the most heinous sin...
..you make crappy videos that look like a 1 day school video project.
..and these videos represent you and your brand.
..and you post them online, for all to see.

Because, it's not that hard, right?

I've been hired by companies that had dreams of DIY video, and then gave up.

Some of reasons were:

-The editing was painful.
-The audio didn't sound right.
-They couldn't find the camera battery charger.
-The in-house video expert was too busy with their actual job.
-The computer with the only copy of the footage died.
-The camera seems broken, can't figure it out.
-The video didn't get any views online.
-The ring light we were recommend by a friend makes eyes look weird.
-It took too long to work out what gear to buy.
-It just took too long / never got around to doing it.

A lot of companies have a full or part time video superstar on staff.

You get a big tick for doing that. ✅

If you're an organisation that knows the value and importance of professional video and can afford to hire a pro, then you are doing the right thing.

What if you can't afford to create that role and you need professional video now and then?

Contract someone, work out a budget and invest in professional video.

A fable.

There was a very loud knock at the door before it burst open.

A lady entered and I stopped what I was doing immediately.

"Don't stop, keep going!" she said.

I went straight back into the same rhythm.

She interrupted me again and asked if she could bring her friends in.

I said "sure".

She left the high school practice room momentarily, I started up once again on the 3rd best drum kit in the school.

An old relic from the 60's or 70's. Probably would be worth a bit now as a collectors item.

Back in the early 90s it was just the 3rd best kit at the school, with wobbly stands and dusty ancient cymbals. ( again - would now be collectors items)

Two guys who were senior students entered the room, with their guitars and amps -

"Can we play with you?"

"Yeah sure, that'll be cool" I might've said.

These three people would alter the path of my life.

I was junior student, and this was my first week at high school.

I had picked up the drums around 3-4 years prior and had lived and breathed the instrument, playing along to my favourite bands on anything I could get my hands on:

Couches
Beanbags
Suitcases
Pots and pans

Bless my good parents, for what was to come would only get louder and louder, year by year.

They eventually gave in and bought me a junior kit when I was 11, before I quickly outgrew and upgrade to a full size kit at age 13.

They would later let my band take over the lounge every weekend to "entertain" the neighbours.

My #1 goal coming to high school was to join a band.

That was it.

I clearly remember the interview with the high school principal the year before, I asked only one question:

"Where are the practice rooms?"

So there I was months later, on my own playing along to imaginary songs.
..until these guys delivered the music.

Music I had never heard before.

Distortion
Loud guitars
Riffs
Energy
Electricity.
Guitar solos.

It somehow clicked immediatly.

This band would end up staying together for 5 years, weather a few line up changes and transcend high school to become a respected band in the local rock/metal scene.

Aside from myself, the band ended with a different line up to how it began. The original two members had long departed and the music had evolved and changed.

It was a great 5 year journey, we played some great gigs, wrote and recorded some great music and had a great time.

My teen years were defined by this band and my love of music.

Just showing up, and prioritising my time with what I loved doing the most, attracted the other people needed to help make my dream happen.

There's a lesson in that.

How I discovered the remarkable truth about human connection.

Behind the lens of a news camera operator:

🎥 2004 to 2005: I worked for a local news station in my hometown, filming stories for the nightly news show.

🎥 2006 to 2017: I worked for national network news stations, covering several news shows.

During these years I discovered something very valuable.

Day after day after day, we interviewed an enormous range of people:

🗣️ Members of the public
🏢 Small business owners
👥 Company owners & directors
👩‍⚕️ Health professionals
👨‍🏫 Educational professionals
👨‍⚖️ Lawyers
🧮 Accountants
🚑 Emergency service workers
🚓 Police
👥 Politicians
🚚 Transport drivers and operators
🏠 Homeowners
🏘️ Renters
🚀 Entrepreneurs
🧒 Children
👦 Teens
🧓 Elderly
🎖️ War veterans
💔 Grieving parents
🏆 Sportspeople and athletes
🎵 Musicians
🎨 Artists
🎭 Famous actors
🤝 Charity volunteers

I’ve had the camera on my shoulder or on a tripod, framing up a shot, moving lights around, and checking audio levels on nearly every type of person in every type of career.

One constant stood out through all the interviews.

No matter how nervous someone was, when the journalist asked them great off-the-cuff and in-the-moment questions, people would temporarily forget the lens was there.

They seemed to relax and become themselves for a second. Their answers were less rehearsed. They gave unscripted replies that stole the spotlight. Often, those ones made the cut.

It’s the humanity that shines through – that really connects to people and keeps them watching.

That’s why, when I now conduct interviews with people as an independent filmmaker and video producer, I try to abandon the questions and get off script as much as possible.

Off-the-cuff questions in news captured the essence of a diverse range of individuals and kept audiences engaged.

For me, the essence of storytelling and human connection comes down to two vital elements:

🗣️ Conversation and curiosity.

It sold-out. A full house!

Here I am with my son at the local premier of a very special mountaineering film I co-produced and edited called the “Tararua S-K 60 years in the making”.

It was unbelievable watching something morph from a small screen to a giant cinema screen.

It’s been a massive privilege to work together with Andy Carruthers on creating this film.

The film has already received some wonderful praise -

"The Tararua range is a priceless asset to Aotearoa and the film catches it perfectly" - Sir Graeme Di**le KNZM MBE

"The first thing I did when I got home last night was buy it and watch it again....a rich tapestry that brought the Tararua community together with loving care" - Tim Sutton, Outdoor adventurer

If you want some inspiration to get into the wilderness and challenge yourself, I highly recommend watching.

We would be grateful for your support.

Conversational interviews, what are they? PT 3

Main interview & creating a comfortable environment.

🔸 It’s the same as before but we just add a camera or two.

🔸 We keep things minimal with gear and with crew.

🔸 There is no one rolling “action” or “cameras rolling”

A rehearsed performance is the last thing we want. We want you to be relatable and natural.

Appearing on camera can be really challenging, but it's a fantastic way to connect with people in a deeper way.

Conversational interviews, what are they? Pt 2

2. Pre interview & question development:

🔸 We can dive further into their story.

🔸 We can test out a range of questions

🔸 We can structure a plan for the main interview.

This gives the interviewee an opportunity to consider what they could say on camera without being put on the spot, resulting in more natural and authentic answers.

By this time everyone is way more comfortable about the process.

Pt 3 tomorrow

15/06/2023

Conversational interviews, what are they?

🔸 Imagine you feel relaxed enough in front of the camera that you talk in the same way you would talk with a friend in a cafe.

🔸 Imagine that instead of being interviewed, the interviewer is not only asking questions but participating in a conversation.

🔸 Imagine that you are not putting on a performance but you are being yourself.

But this needs preparation.

There is a pathway…
