International events experts explored the latest developments in New Zealand's business events industry last week.

The IAPCO (International Association for Professional Congress Organisers) Council were in Auckland for their annual strategy meeting. Around a dozen global leaders, including the association's president and president-elect, gathered in Tāmaki Makaurau to map out their five-year vision.

Beyond their strategic planning sessions, the International Association for Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) Council members donned hard hats to tour Aotearoa's newest convention centre, the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).

They also enjoyed a taste of Tāmaki Makaurau's unique cultural and local experiences. This immersion gave council members a greater appreciation of Auckland's potential as a premier global business event and conference destination.

In addition, NZICC hosted engaging interactive workshops with the IAPCO council and local stakeholders, including the Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) and Tourism New Zealand Business Events (TNZ).

These sessions helped Team Auckland gain expertise and knowledge from IAPCO, broadening their understanding of key global trends and strategies for engaging the next generation, with insights into customer experience, bidding, conference legacy, sustainability, and authentic Indigenous storytelling.

Positive momentum in NZ events industry

New Zealand Event organisers are doing more and spending more on events in 2024, indicating a continued positive momentum in the industry.

The findings of the Event Industry Report 2024, crafted in collaboration with the New Zealand Events Association, indicate a promising outlook for the industry.

The report found event spending continues to grow significantly this year, with 33% of event professionals planning to increase their event spending. However, this was down from 35% last year. For organisations that have increased their events budget for 2024, more volume of events and a rise in F&B costs have been the most important factors behind the budget increase.

A rise in travel and accommodation costs has also been one of the top factors behind event budgets increasing. The report also found that 68% of event professionals have plans to increase their total volume of events in 2024.

More than 50% of the respondents said they would hold more events in person this year. This is a drop from last year, where nearly 70% of the respondents said they would host more in-person events.

Adelaide secures MicroTas 2025 to Australia for the first time.

Adelaide has been chosen as the host city for the MicroTAS 2025 Conference, the first time that the MicroTAS series will be held in the Southern Hemisphere.

‘Miniaturised Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences - Micro-Total Analysis Systems’ (MicroTAS) is an annual conference focussing on microfluidics, a multidisciplinary field involving chemistry, the life sciences and biology, impacting the environment, agriculture, energy, food and health.

It draws a global audience of engineers and scientists from academic, government and corporate research backgrounds.
MicroTAS 2025 will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) between 2 and 6 November 2025 and is expected to attract 1,100 delegates, 950 of which will be international visitors.

Commenting on the selection of Adelaide, Professor Breadmore said “One of the strengths of Adelaide is its commitment to sustainability, and the initiatives and investment that has been made in the City and the ACC. Combined with the perfect venue layout and location for our conference and the wonderful food and produce, we felt that Adelaide could truly deliver the Australian experience we wanted to offer to our delegates”.
