As we approach the end of 2024, I’m thinking back about year one for Music First: What was a simple idea and a chat with Sam in January, quickly became a party. Soon after, we were invited into a collaboration with the yet to be opened Nami Record Bar, looking after the installation of their sound, and booking DJs. At this point we registered our company: MFSB - Music First Sound & Booking Ltd. We are now looking after a range of venues and growing all the time. In July, after a coffee with Holiday Records, we decided to start a record label too. Why not! 2025 is going to see a bunch of releases on Music First Recordings and we are extremely hyped! It’s quite a trip to stop - just for a moment - and think about it all. We’ve been honoured to host Manuel Darquart, Ron Trent, Benny Salvador, Musclecars and Darryn Jones, and next week we welcome our final international guest for 2024: the legendary Kenji Takimi. Come and join us at Double Whammy on Friday 15 November. And keep the Music First! X

I first encountered the music of Darryn Jones when I stumbled across a ridiculously hot DJ mix on Soundcloud entitled “Disco Love Letter Part 4” in 2015. It was simply listed as DJ Darryn. Who was DJ Darryn?! I was intrigued. The mix was BURNING hot. The sort of mix that demanded repeated spins. The sort of mix you told your friends about.
I remember being so crazy about the mix that I made Theo Parrish listen to it when he visited NZ in early 2016 in a car ride with Harmony and CC Disco. I vividly remember Theo saying “WHO is THIS?!!”. A true DJs DJ!

I’ve been very privileged to be involved in for the last couple of years alongside the don & a wonderful team from Auckland Council and the wider music community of Tāmaki Makaurau. SUSO aims to give high school students from Auckland the chance to showcase their talents in musical performances, dance and electronic music production. Saturday marked the finals showcase at the Town Hall: An inspiring day, the talent on display was incredible. The future is bright!

Test pressings have landed and are sounding HOT! These are pressed on orange vinyl whereas the general release will be on black vinyl.
At 5pm Friday 23 August (NZ time), we are going to give away TWO test pressings to ticket holders - one for Auckland / Double Whammy and one for Wellington / Meow. Buy a ticket before 5pm on Friday to either show and you’ll be in draw!
There is only 5 test pressings in orange - they will become very rare collectors items. Good luck! X
