All the way back in March as those long summer evenings were starting to wane and an autumn chill was threatening the air, three young men with musical abilities seemingly beyond their years took to the stage of the Talent Show.
With some Hendrix inspired surf rock jams they confidently impressed the judges and took out the first place prize, winning themselves a myriad of high fives and a recording session here at Sublime.

Please, I urge, keep your ears peeled for King George and their future endeavours!!

We’ve had some fun recording sessions recently but as per usual I took zero photos. One of the bands (Abandoned Land) were kind enough to gift us one of these excellent Boney Toes stomp boxes, designed and built by two members of the band; Matt Bokser & Gary Shirley.
The sound certainly matches the craftsmanship and it pairs very well with an assortment of guitar pedals.

Here is the bio inscribed on the underside of the box.

Your Boney Toes Stompbox has been handcrafted from heart Rimu edged with Jarra reclaimed from the floor of the 1883 Timaru Ballantynes Building.
We obtained the wood from all-round good bu**er and building owner, Tim Black when we explained that we had a use for the timber that was so cunning you could pin a tale on it and call it a weasel.
This individually named limited run of 50 stomp boxes is called ‘The Black Adder Series’ in homage to the fact the Recycled Rimu was sourced from Tim Black, owner and proprietor of Hector Black’s, arguably Timaru’s coolest pub.
Designed and created in Oamaru, New Zealand; by musicians *(and legends, Gary Shirley and Matt Bokser) for musicians, every stompbox tells a story. We hope you love playing your Boney Toes Stomper as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you.

Boney Toes artwork has been produced by well known North Otago Artist Trish Shirley.

(Sublime) a. of the most lofty or exalted nature, inspiring ANALOGUE awe;

Sublime - limestone sub soil producing Sublime pinot and food that will be imbibed whilst Sublime (-ing);

Sublime (-ing) staying and recording at New Zealands premier destination recording studio in Kurow, Otago.

The Waitaki Valley is a geological, cultural and visual phenomenon, whose secret sauce lies underground in the layers of limestone rock that were once sea creatures swamming about. Due to Elton John’s scientific theory “The Circle Of Life” these creatures formed into the regions now famous Whitestone.

This limestone sub soil makes the Waitaki Valley an exciting wine region, adding different dimensions and flavours to New Zealands many other excellent wine regions.

When recording at Sublime Studio you can savour the fruits of the Waitaki, drinking Sublime wine grown here on the property, eating Sublime vegetables grown in our (currently booming) garden, and eat our meat that has spent it’s entire life at the Sublime Health Spa (or not, we are certainly vegetarian and vegan friendly). All of these are tended by our resident farmer, gardener, viticulturist, chef, painter, and all round talent extraordinaire: Fenella.

Pictured here is our Sublime Pinot Noir, but Fenella also makes a cracking Chardonnay.

Also shoutout to another talent extraordinaire for donating her wonderful childhood art for the latest Sublime Wine label.

We all want the rock n roll jobs, the sexy jobs, the jobs that get you high fives and name recognition. But if I’m honest I think maybe the most satisfying studio job, and by far the least sexy, could be gear maintenance….?

Like a classic car the sultry old Soundcraft is a dream when it’s running, but from time to time things break down, they wear out, s**t just happens. And so with some of Sherlock Holmes’ methodical deduction and a circuit diagram (and occasionally for some real excitement an oscilloscope) oodles of fun can be had, tracing signals, identifying the offensive components and replacing said culprits.

And, it sure beats troubleshooting/fixing/screaming in frustration at problems in the digital realm.

Anyways, now all 24 channels are up and running it’s back to mixing and mastering. Ooh it’s a tough ol’ life.

Finally fixed my phone screen so I can post again (yay) although I’ve still only got the wide angle lens so plz excuse the strange angles. New year New social MEdia.

were just here cashing in their 1st place prize from 2023s & Bring The Noise competition. These fine fellows clearly demonstrated why they deserved to win 1st place and spend two days recording some exciting new material.

As per usual I took zero photos so this post is all the proof you’re getting that the session really happened…..

It is constantly a chuffing great privilege and honour to be involved with musical projects that then get released into the wild for peoples listening pleasures.

Recently however it has been a slightly different feeling, one of joy, elation, bewilderment and relief, because now Cuticles LP Major Works is out in the real world, for all prying ears and keen brains, thanks in all to the legend of Siltbreeze Records. And for those wondering: yes that is custard and yes the cover is scratch and sniff.

Wow it may have been over a week ago but we’re still reeling from all that noise what you brung.

Firstly big up for taking out the top spot, you guys nailed it, very much looking forward to seeing what ya’ll can cook up in the stu. Secondly a special shoutout to audio and for taking out 2nd and 3rd, you were superb, it was a tough old call on the night.
And thirdly well done to all the other bands that entered, it was a wonderful treat to be able to witness all the mega talent around Dunedin at the moment, you peeps were all wonderful and I look forward to hearing/seeing more of yas around Duns.

And of course a huge shoutout to all the legends at , the MCs, the tech crew and of course the smiling bar staff.

All aboard the G Bus Baby!!

When the folks at announced their version of the fabled G Bus compressor back in December of last year we knew Sublime simply had to have one. Well, after purchasing the unit and waiting patiently for it to ship from the US, we then went through a busy spell which meant the dang thing sat on the side, glaring at us, longingly, while we worked away on some fantastic projects (photos of which I will post soon enough, I promise) but alas upon emerging out the other side I keenly bust out my soldering iron and set to work.

I must say I found the trickiest part of the build was getting REW to cooperate, which is to say, the project was a breeze! The build itself is straightforward, DIYRE have done a fantastic job of designing the whole build; essentially creating a solder by numbers project, that culminates in a spectacular piece of gear.

The term “glue” is oft bandied around in the audio world, and the SSL G Bus compressor that this DIYRE model is based on had heaps of it - enhancing clarity and cohesion all the while making mixes and/or drums and/or most things bigger, edgier, powerful-er, more kick you in the face-ier. More glue more punch - Bruce Li slathered in Pritt Stick.

On a side note; if anyone would kindly like to donate towards my GoFundMe so that I can finish my time machine and head back to 1976 to try out a real SSL Bus compressor in a 4000B console, it’d be much appreciated.

We had the wonderful here for a drum session recently, laying down some stonking grooves for s final year university project. Mads took the helm on this one - engineering and producing while I was assisting and making tea (and taking photos for once). I hadn’t truly realised how comfy our sofas were until now!
If you are in need of a session drummer down this way (from country to death metal and everything in between) then you can certainly do no better than this dude. Now, Tyler can really play the drums, I mean, he was born to play the drums. The combination of his philosophy and methodical approach make Tyler both a pleasure to work with and a force to be reckoned with. I’m seeing a bright future for this guy!

It will be quite the day when we can pronounce that Sublime Studio is 100 years old but while we cannot quite make that claim just yet, we can indeed claim that the Woolshed which houses the studio is itself a century old (well, almost, it was built in 1927….) and thus as well as our beautiful analogue gear needing some maintenance from time to time, so does the studio itself and therefore we have seized the temperate days to repaint the original tin roof with some beautiful @duluxnz Roof & Trim Semi Gloss, future proofing and protecting the building from the elements.
