Saving the wasted parts of every fish caught is helping the environment and providing tasty delicacies around the Auckland region, says Daily Encourager, thanks to a project called Kai Ika. An approach was made to the Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in Māngere East which had a food distribution system in place and soon Kai Ika was born. The programme grew out of another venture called FishCare that aimed to help recreational fishers minimise their impact on the marine environment which included using as much of each fish as possible.

Kevin is a science teacher in Auckland, and Philip - who spent 30 years as a police officer - runs a motel in Hokitika. They use three measures – the girth, the height, and the spread of the crown at the summit of the tree. “That’s what makes a champion tree. A combination of those three things,” says Kevin.

The Government is topping up the budget for gender affirmation services and training for GPs to be better skilled in advising transgender youth, Newshub reports. But the number of people on the waiting list for gender affirmation surgery continues to grow, with some having to wait for more than a decade. Elevation Street in Flat Bush and several surrounding streets are being used as a dumping ground by those wanting to get rid of household waste and other items. An average of 1.3 people catch the ferry from Te Onewa Northcote Point Wharf, Stuff reveals, despite it reopening after a $2.6 million upgrade. North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby said many Northcote and Birkenhead residents commuted to the city for office jobs, which were impacted by Covid-19 restrictions last year. Auckland Transport plans to explore ways to get North Shore residents back on the ferries once its operators recover from staff shortages. It will also seek to improve the timing of the 928 bus to the wharf, so that better connects with the ferry schedule.

The truth is we don’t need to eat red meat for health, but we don’t have to give it up entirely either.
