- Whakaari Waiata

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Whakaari White Island eruption, we invite you to join us for a remembrance concert at Ohope Beach Golf Links on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Experience an evening of music featuring Joel Shadbolt from LAB, the Kora Whānau, Maisey Rika, No Code, and many other talented artists.

The proceeds from the Whakaari Waiata concert will contribute to the establishment of a physical memorial to honour those affected by the tragic events that happened at Whakaari (White Island) on 9 December 2019.

The memorial developed in partnership with the Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, and the Whakatāne District Council will be revealed in December to honor the lives lost, provide a place for reflection, respect, and support in the healing process.

This memorial will hold profound social, cultural, and heritage significance for all New Zealanders, commemorating a tragic event with global resonance. It will also serve as a meaningful tribute to the families directly affected and the local community that came together during and after the tragedy.

Local Gecko Productions continues our work with Rotorua Whare Taonga as we head to to Te Papaiouru Marae on the 7th December, if interested in attending please contact Clark who's details are listed in this panui.

E ngā uri o Ngāti Whakaue, nau mai haere mai!

Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa | Rotorua Museum is working with Te Arawa whānui and the wider community to redevelop their long terms exhibitions. As part of this, they are seeking feedback on which Ngāti Whakaue taonga tuku iho should be included and the stories that we want shared about them. We have an opportunity to bring some of our taonga back to the marae to enjoy and wānanga about. Some of these taonga include:

-Murirangaranga, Tutānekai’s koauau
-Wakahuia, carved by Te Whanoa
-Te Hunga, Pātītī named Te Hunga, belonged to Haerehuka Taua
-Te Kāoreore, Mere, belonged to Te Kanapu Haerehuka
-Rākau Whakapapa, belonged to Haerehuka Taua
-Two pou from Muruika pā

We also invite whānau to bring their own taonga if they would like to share these with the iwi on the day.

The wānanga will be held at Te Papaiōuru Marae on Saturday, 7 December, commencing at 9am with a pōwhiri as the taonga arrive, followed by morning tea and wānanga kōrero from 10:15am.

The kōrero shared on the day will be captured via audio and video to build the mātauranga of these taonga (ensuring museum records are as accurate as possible) and will help inform design components of the new exhibitions of the reopened Whare Taonga. This content will form an oral history that will be owned and managed by Ngāti Whakaue. Te Whare Taonga will enter into an agreement with Ngāti Whakaue seeking to use this content for the new exhibition.

We invite all Ngāti Whakaue uri to attend and look forward to sharing the day in wānanga together.

For any pātai, please contact Clark Pirika via phone: 027 545 4389 or email: [email protected]
