Be aware that the Queenstown Marathon will make it a bit harder to get around on Saturday. Road closures are indicated in the map.

Things are going to be hectic on the roads, so if you want to support the runners at the finish line, we recommend you catch Orbus Queenstown into town rather than try to take your car.

Update from QLDC regarding cryptosporidium outbreak in Queenstown
Here is a summary of todayโ€™s key developments:

QLDC is working to meet the requirements of the compliance order issued by Taumata Arowai yesterday. Officers from Councilโ€™s infrastructure team had a constructive meeting with the regulator this morning and continue to engage positively.
Council has complied with the first milestone of the compliance order by delivering a community engagement plan before 5.00pm today.
There is no change to the areas of Queenstown/Frankton where residents and businesses need to boil water, nor to the areas where this is not a requirement; Upper Clutha residents and businesses do not need to boil water. See the full list below.
Case numbers confirmed by NPHS Southern stand at 21 โ€“ an increase of four since yesterday; see their media release here.
QLDC conducted a media stand-up this morning to enable key messages to reach the wider community. This was livestreamed and a recording is available on our website โ€“ scroll down to the bottom of this page https://www.qldc.govt.nz/crypto
A business response group comprising staff from Destination Queenstown and Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce alongside QLDC (first established during the pandemic) met this afternoon; its key role will be to review current information and inform the business community of the most relevant aspects (noting that this information will also be available on the QLDC website)
The adult spa pool at Alpine Aqualand has been closed as a precaution until further notice while staff review its separate filtration system; this decision was made in line with advice from NPHS Southern.
Whilst all other pools remain open as normal, the following preventative measures have been implemented today at the facility in line with Recreation Aotearoaโ€™s Cryptosporidium Protocol For Swimming Pools (noting these measures do not apply at Wฤnaka Recreation Centre):
cancelling learn to swim classes (including school lessons) for under-8s;
advising parents that although the final decision remains with them, QLDC does not advise under-8s use the pools while there is cryptosporidium in the community;
similarly advising that pregnant women, immunocompromised people and babies do not use the pool while cryptosporidium is in the community; and
advising the community in general that if someone with cryptosporidium were to use the pools at Alpine Aqualand that there is a chance that it could infect someone else.
QLDC has received a number of offers of support from other councils and specialists from around Aotearoa New Zealand for which weโ€™re incredibly grateful.
Areas where people should boil water:

Queenstown town centre (north along Gorge Rd as far as and including Industrial Place);
Queenstown Hill;
Frankton Rd and suburbs on the hill above Frankton Rd;
Fernhill and Sunshine Bay;
Frankton including Five Mile, Remarkables Park and Glenda Dr;
Quail Rise and Tucker Beach Rd;
Kelvin Heights; and
Hanleyโ€™s Farm.
The notice applies to residential and commercial properties (including accommodation providers) that are connected to a public supply in the locations identified above.

Unaffected areas (no need to boil water):

Arrowtown;
Arthurs Point;
Lake Hayes Estate;
Shotover Country;
Upper Clutha; and
any properties on a private supply (e.g Jacks Point).
Boiling water kills any microorganisms that could be present. In the locations outlined above people are advised to boil all their drinking water for at least one minute (or use bottled water) for the following uses:

Drinking water โ€“ including cold beverages, ice-making and coffee machines.
Food preparation โ€“ including washing uncooked foods such as salad, vegetables, and fruit.
Preparing baby formula.
Washing food utensils.
Brushing teeth.
Pets.

General information about how to stop the spread of cryptosporidium and what to do if you have symptoms provided by NPHS Southern:
How to help stop the spread of infection
The best thing you and your whฤnau can do to stop the spread of cryptosporidium (crypto) infection is to practise good hand hygiene. This means scrubbing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and drying them thoroughly with a clean towel:
After using the bathroom, changing a diaper, or helping others use the bathroom
Before eating or cooking
After handling an animal
After gardening, even if you used gloves
When caring for someone with diarrhoea
Other ways to help stop the spread of cryptosporidium infection are:
Stay home or keep young children home when you or they have an active case of diarrhoea
Donโ€™t drink untreated water
Shower before using recreational swimming facilities to wash away any potential Cryptosporidium organisms on your body.
Donโ€™t swallow pool water.
Wash all produce before eating it. Peeling the skins will also reduce your risk.
Take young children at the pool to the bathroom frequently.
Change childrenโ€™s diapers often.
Stay clear of the water if you or your children have diarrhoea. Stay out of the water for a full two weeks after the diarrhoea subsides.
What to do if you have symptoms
The most common symptom of crypto infection is smelly, watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps. If you live in the Queenstown area or have visited there in the last 12 days and are experiencing these symptoms, please call your GP and inform them.

About these diseases and how to prevent them. What are cryptosporidium (say โ€˜crip-toe-spor-idiumโ€™) and giardia? Cryptosporidiosis Outbreak in Queenstown Area

Te Whatu Ora - National Public Health Service has been notified of fifteen cases of cryptosporidiosis in the urban Queenstown area and is advising people to monitor for symptoms of the infection.

โ€œThe most common symptoms of cryptosporidium infection are smelly, watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps,โ€ says Dr Emma Sherwood, Southern Medical Officer of Health.

โ€œIf you live or work in the Queenstown area or have visited there in the last 12 days and are experiencing these symptoms, please call your GP and inform them.โ€

Cryptosporidium (also called โ€˜cryptoโ€™) is a parasite found in the gut of infected people and animals. It is passed on in the faeces (poos) of infected humans and animals. People become infected when they swallow the parasites, usually in contaminated water.

Cryptosporidium can also be spread by hands contaminated with faeces during toilet use or nappy changing. From hands it can spread to surfaces, toys, food and water. It can also spread by contact with infected animals, or in shared water such as swimming pools.

The source of infection in this outbreak is under investigation and currently unknown. Te Whatu Ora is working alongside Queenstown Lakes District Council to establish the source of infection.

A boil water notice has been issued by Queenstown-Lakes District Council for Queenstown and Frankton residents and businesses on a public supply.

People in the affected area advised to boil all their drinking water for at least one minute (or use bottled water) for the following uses:

Drinking water โ€“ including cold beverages, ice-making and coffee machines
Food preparation โ€“ including washing uncooked foods such as salad, vegetables, and fruit
Preparing baby formula
Washing food utensils
Brushing teeth

What should you do if you have cryptosporidiosis?

There are things that you should do to look after yourself and others:

Ensure you drink plenty of fluids (if water, follow boil water notices). This is especially important for sick children as children become dehydrated easily.
Do not return to work, school or preschool until free of symptoms for 48 hours.
Do not use swimming pools, hot tubs, or splash pads for at least 2 weeks after your symptoms stop.
Avoid visiting people in hospital or long-term care facilities for at least 48 hours after your symptoms stop.
Wash hands regularly with soap and hot water especially after visiting the toilet. Dry hands thoroughly after washing.
If possible, do not prepare food for anyone else until 48 hours after your symptoms stop.
Disinfect toilets regularly.
Use your own towel; do not share with anyone else.
Bathe separately or bathe sick children after others.
Seek medical care through your GP or call Healthline if you have health concerns

Kia ora koutou katoa

Please find a boil water notice for Queenstown and Frankton below.

Boil water notice issued for Queenstown and Frankton
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has this afternoon issued a boil water notice to Queenstown and Frankton residents and businesses on a public supply.

QLDC Property and Infrastructure General Manager Tony Avery said this notice affects all properties serviced by the Councilโ€™s Queenstown supply including Frankton, Quail Rise and Tucker Beach Rd, Kelvin Heights and Hanleyโ€™s Farm. Jackโ€™s Point is a privately operated water supply and is not affected.

โ€œNPHS Southern has confirmed a number of local cases of illness caused by the protozoa, cryptosporidium. There are currently eight confirmed cases originating in neighbourhoods serviced by this supply. The source of these cases is not yet known and there is no confirmed link to the local water supply. However, on the basis of advice from NPHS Southern regarding the nature of symptoms related to cryptosporidium infection and the potential speed and ease of transmission, we are issuing this notice,โ€ he said.

โ€œWe are aware of recent reports on social media of people living in Fernhill feeling unwell. As a result, Council via its contractor began more frequent monitoring in the Fernhill area on Friday 8 September. All results to date have been, and continue to be, normal.โ€

โ€œThis monitoring tests for indicators of contamination via the presence of E.coli or total coliforms, and also checks residual chlorine levels. However, this testing does not specifically identify the presence or absence of cryptosporidium. Whilst there has been no result to date that indicates the local water supply has been compromised, as the supply at this location does not currently have a protozoa barrier as part of the treatment process this cannot be conclusively ruled out.โ€

โ€œIn general, the potential for cryptosporidium contamination is highly unlikely. But with these cases confirmed, and to minimise othersโ€™ potential exposure to cryptosporidiosis, all residents and businesses in these areas should boil their water until further notice.โ€

Pets.
โ€œWe will continue to engage with NPHS Southern and Taumata Arowai (the Drinking Water Regulator), and will issue further advice as and when the situation changes,โ€ added Mr Avery. โ€œAnyone with related symptoms should seek medical advice.โ€

More information can be found on the Taumata Arowai website: https://www.taumataarowai.govt.nz/for-communities/emergencies/
