40 years ago today, Iron Maiden released their fifth studio album, POWERSLAVE. Shortly after the conclusion of the World Piece Tour in 1983, the band spent several weeks recording their next album at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. The salty air must have agreed with them, because the final product was nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to the success of hit singles like "Aces High" and "2 Minutes to Midnight," the album shot up to #21 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold in less than two months. During the Somewhere Back In Time world tour (2008-2009), Bruce Dickinson said that of all the songs in their catalog, he was most excited about dusting off "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to play again in their live set. We couldn't agree more, Bruce. Up The Irons! 🤘

"On stage, the Human Instinct is another trio. The fantastic drum kit of Maurice Greer dominates the stage. Greer has a Brian Jones look, and a cheerful vocal style, as well as a strenuous stand-up drumming technique. Lead guitarist Billy Te Kahika and Peter Barton look right for a young group, but it is Greer who is the focal point, the crowd-winner. They play recent Top 20 material – ‘I Started A Joke’, and punchier things – ‘Midnight Mover’. Good, bright, loud music. The dancers are wild, jumping with energy."

In May 1969, ably guided by photographer Max Thomson, Playdate’s by-no-means indefatigable reporter Tom McWilliams caught Auckland’s late shows in four city nightspots: Mojo’s, Embers, Montmartre and Bo Peep. We have republished it:

Sad news overnight with the sudden passing of Rodger Fox. Rodger was a hugely influential part of the NZ Big Band Jazz landscape.

Our experience of Rodger was as a regular adjudicator for the KBB Music Festival and director for the honours jazz band at the festival. He was also an adjudicator at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival. Bringing together his vast experience and dedication, he not only was an incredible musician but a talented teacher and enriched the lives of those that were honoured to meet and play alongside him.

For many years we were proud to support Rodgers tours and musical endeavours through both Rockshop and KBB Music.

From all of us, we will miss you Rodger.

New Zealand singer Margaret Urlich has Passed

Famous for her duet with Daryl Braithwaite "The Horses" as well as hit singles such as "Number One", "Boy In The Moon" and "Escaping", Margaret Urlich has sadly lost her 2.5 year battle with cancer.

The New Zealand-born singer died at her home in the Southern Highlands in New South Wales.

Margaret did not appear in the music video for The Horses and model Gillian Bailey lip-synched her backing vocals instead, with Urlich later saying she regretted not taking part.

“I was nicknamed Gilli Vanilli for a while,” Bailey told News Corp in 2016.

“I was recording an album in London when they did the video. I could have come back to do the video but I was doing my own thing by that stage. A lot of people know it’s my singing, but they don’t put two and two together that it’s not me in the video.

“In retrospect it was probably a little bit silly because the song was so huge. But at the time I was young and a bit stupid, I did what I thought was right. But it was absolutely no disrespect to Daryl.”

Urlich started out her career as a vocalist in the band Peking Man before joining a New Zealand all-girl group called When the Cat’s Way.

She won her ARIA in 1991 for Best Breakthrough Artist after becoming the first female solo artist to top the New Zealand charts.
