History made on the water. Zofia Wells delivers a composed, hard earned Tanner Cup win, becoming just the third woman in the event’s long history to take the title. A result built on consistency, calm decisions, and depth of skill.

Zofia Wells makes history with her 2026 Tanner Cup win, joining just two other women to claim the P Class title.

In the deep south, where the Pacific Ocean rolls in uninterrupted from the horizon and river mouths weave their way through quiet rural landscapes, the Clutha District offers a different kind of New Zealand summer - unhurried, uncrowded, and deeply connected to the water.

From today through to Friday, the P Class Nationals are racing out of Kohimarama Yacht Club. The P Class has been training New Zealand sailors since the 1920s. For a little about the P Class history, check out our centenary article https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0tTNj0 Some of our readers reached out with their memories, the earliest heralding back to the 1950s. But it is not just a Class from the past. Many of New Zealand’s current big-boat sailors, including Peter Burling, one of the country’s America’s Cup and SailGP stars, also used the P Class as a pathway to international sailing.

Racing got underway yesterday. Zofia Wells took early control of the Tanner Cup with scores of 1, 2, 1, under pressure from Greta Hutton and Noah Petersen who will continue their own two-way battle. In the Centenary Trophy, Hamish Brown decisively leads the fleet, winning all of yesterday's three races. Annika Wells and Flora Stevens sit a little further behind.

At the time of writing, the fleet was still waiting for today’s wind to pick up. None-the-less, we have captured some great shots.

If you’re anywhere near Kohimarama over the next few days, head down, watch the racing, and give these young sailors some encouragement from the shore.

The first time Boating New Zealand reviewed the Fi-Glass Warrior, the conditions were poor enough to question the decision to leave the dock. As the 2006 report recorded: “We should not have ventured beyond the Westhaven Marina breakwater, but pushed on under the Auckland Harbour Bridge and into t...

Just an hour inland from the Canterbury coast lies one of New Zealand’s most remarkable freshwater playgrounds. The Ashburton Lakes, known collectively as Ōtūwharekai, are a chain of glittering alpine waters set within the rugged expanse of Hakatere Conservation Park.
