The Palmerston North Linux Users Group will not have its usual monthly meeting for September, due to uncertainty around the timing of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We hope to see you all in October.

Good afternoon from the desk of the chairman.

Our second Wednesday of the month meetup is on in a smaller fashion this month as sadly we have no presentations lined up. Calfsmart are opening their doors to us again from 7.30pm tonight (Wed 8 Nov) to come down, have a yarn and discuss anything linux or computer related and just have a good time. Sadly I personally will not be there due to extenuating circumstances at work tonight (those same circumstances are why this is late. Oops. Sorry about that -.- ).

ALSO: PLUG End of Year BBQ
Last year the timing was well off and really didn’t work out so I’d like to have one earlier, so to accommodate this, I’ve created a poll over at Strawpoll to get some feedback on a date. The link is http://www.strawpoll.me/14351768 - Select a preferred date and week, and I’ll make it so.

Vote Now! [Friday Evening?] [Saturday Evening?] [Sunday Evening?] [Weekend of Sat 18th (next week)] [Weekend of Sat 25th (Week after)]

--FROM THE CHAIRMANS DESK--

Hi All.

Sadly as the subject reads, we need a venue. Don is overseas currently so can’t get us into the cossie, and sadly Digital Ocean have integrated with B&M and have vacated their premesis so we can no longer use that.

I’m looking for a stable reoccurring venue. Ideally it needs to have some form of internet access, good wall for a projector/decent sized television for presentations, as close to free as possible, be relatively quiet so even those most softly spoken can be heard and ideally as close to town as we can get. The cossie is OK but can get a wee bit noisy which is bad for those who haven’t got the most powerful of voices, and at the moment it relies on a single point of contact to be around. If anyone can assist with this, my contact details are at the bottom of this email. Please get back to me ASAP if you can help.

As for subjects for the next meetup, it’s shaping up to be a session on scripting the linux shell, and a multiplatform open source video streaming project called OBS.

Thanks! I’m hoping we can get the venue situation rectified ASAP and inject some stability.

Nick, Chairman

Hot news for fans of Debian. Version 9 codenamed "Stretch" goes stable June 17!

From the desk of the Chairman:

*Tap tap tap* Is this thing on?

Must be. First off, hello, and apologies. I'm sorry we currently have no website, mailing list, the page has been a little silent, and no events have happened.

Spinning Planet have decided to no longer help us with hosting, and I wish to thank Brynn for his gracious hosting over the years. A new website will be coming soon, but there will be more details about that at a meeting this month.

Yes, a meeting! It will be at the usual place and time:

PN Cosmopolitan Club
Wednesday 10 May 2017. Doors at 7PM, 7.15PM kick off sharp(ish).

There is a lot to discuss. And there are a few things I feel we need to change in order to maintain ourselves and keep going forward. General agenda will be as follows:

7.15 Welcome
7.16 PLUG Moving Forward - Round table discussion on how to best move forward and prosper in a new age. Regular meetings, format of those meetings, people to help and so forth.
7.45 Break time - buy a drink from the bar
8.00 News and help time
8.15 More discussion if needed, if not, a small presentation on TVHeadend from Nick.
9PM (ish) official meeting close.

I look forward to catching up with you all on Wednesday, and engaging in some constructive ways to push ourselves forward to bigger and better things.

Cheers and thanks!

Heard about this really neat resource in this week's Security Now podcast on the TWIT.TV network. EFF has put together a "surveillance self defence" site at https://ssd.eff.org/ - in it is some really good stuff to help both you and your friends and family be safer and more secure online.

Reproducible builds are a good step, but Red Hat and Ubuntu don't want to join in.

Due to inclement weather tonight's BBQ will now be at 197 College Street! Thanks, The Chairman.
