I was torn between making this show about the sudden cold snap we’re experiencing this week, or putting together a tribute to Martin Phillipps, who passed away last Sunday. Then it hit me: cold, Chills – I can do both! So this week’s show features songs about cold and winter, from Little Feat, Tori Amos, Troy Kingi, Fleet Foxes, Jenny Morris, Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band, Lost Tribe Aotearoa, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and three songs by The Chills, including two about the cold!

I’m sure I’ll be at least the fourth Most FM host this Sunday paying homage to the great John Mayall, who passed away on Monday. So I’ve had to come up with an angle I hope no one else has taken – a show demonstrating the scope of Mayall’s influence by featuring tracks by, or notably showcasing, 13 musicians who have passed through the ranks of his backing band, including each of the three pictured with him here.
There will be songs by the Rolling Stones, Cream, two configurations of Fleetwood Mac, The Golden Palominos (ft. Jack Bruce), Rufus & Chaka Khan (ft. Ernie Watts), Free, Walter Trout, Mick Ronson (ft. Aynsley Dunbar), McGuinness Flint, Carolyn Wonderland (lead guitarist in the final line-up of the Bluesbreakers), and one from the man himself, John Mayall, about being stuck in New Zealand!

The world makes very little sense these days. Rather than depress you with a list of the more obviously unfathomable current events, I thought I’d distract you from them with a list of songs that either call for explanations (or to refrain from explaining), ask pertinent questions – What? Why? How? – or try to make sense. Featuring Gil Scott-Heron, Patty Larkin, The Exponents, John Prine, Marvin Gaye, Ashton Edminster, Tom Waits, Crash Test Dummies, Split Enz, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Travis, and Billie Holiday.

NEW YORK MINUTE: With New Plymouth Operatic Society’s show ‘Jersey Boys’ opening this week, Sunday’s show is inspired by the Big Apple and its suburbs. Too soon? Perhaps, but the stranding of the Interislander ferry Aratere is a good excuse to put together a playlist of songs about ferries, strandings and running aground. HELLO? - Sunday at 5pm on What’s It All About, Andy? Brought to you by Pianoworks. Only on The Most 100.4FM in Taranaki, 107.4FM in Ōakura, and streaming live at www.mostfm.com
There was a meme circulating recently that said ‘If I sing “Hello…” and you think of Lionel Richie and not Adele, then your back is probably sore.’ Well, to be perfectly honest, neither of those two spring to mind for me. In fact, they wouldn’t even make the top ten, and they do not appear in this week’s show. And my back is fine. Instead, we have 14 songs beginning with “Hello” by the likes of Ian Hunter, ELO, Kate Bush, Joe Jackson, Judy Collins (with the original recording of a song later popularised by Alice Cooper!), R.E.M., Melissa Etheridge, Simon & Garfunkel, Emmylou Harris, Adrian Belew, Bonzo Dog Band, Elton John, and Super Furry Animals. It took some searching to find a Kiwi track that fits the brief, and the closest I could settle on was one by The Crocodiles - even then, the first word is technically “Well…”.

People from all around Aotearoa are descending on Auckland this weekend, to march in protest at the government’s Fast-track Approvals Bill, designed to prevent all those pesky resource consents and environmental considerations from getting in the way of making a buck.
In commemoration, this week’s show is on the theme of fast things – and, in keeping with the zeitgeist, I put the playlist together very quickly, with the minimum of consultation. Featuring tracks from Reb Fountain, Jack The Lad, The Warratahs, Steve Earle, Fiona Apple, Solomon Burke, Elemeno P, Renée Reed, Frank Turner, James Reyne, Alvis Bradley and, well it had to be THAT song by Tracy Chapman.

With the terrible treatment of some 900 former postmasters in the UK currently making global news, this week’s show features songs about letters, postcards, telegrams and postal workers. The biggest story of the past week has, undoubtedly, been the displays of the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis, the Northern and Southern Lights respectively, which have been visible much further away from the poles than usual due to some massive sunstorms. Another thing to happen this week was the passing of saxophone great David Sanborn. His distinctive alto has blessed a lot of music over the past 50 years. So this week’s show is split into two themes. Seven songs about auroras and sunstorms from Renaissance, Goldenhorse, Bob Mould, Tony Parker NESC, Meat Puppets, Foo Fighters and Crowded House; followed by five tracks featuring classic David Sanborn solos, by Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, David Bowie, The Eagles and Ian Hunter.

Seeing as this Sunday is the 15th Mother’s Day since the show began, I’ve been looking for a related theme I haven’t used before. Well, here’s one – other uses of the word “mother.” And no, I’m not using the one followed by two silent syllables…
So it’s songs about Mother Earth, the motherland, the motherlode, the mothership, mother tongue, Mother Goose, Mother Duck, etc. Featuring tracks from Sparks, Natalie Merchant, Georgia Soul Twisters, Mother Earth, Emitt Rhodes, Jan Preston, Parliament, 10,000 Maniacs, Jethro Tull, Lesley Duncan, The Staves, and Show of Hands.
And yes, the picture shows the original P-Funk Mothership, which I photographed in the Museum of African American History and Culture, in Washington, DC.

Apropos of nothing, this week’s show is all about hunger. Well, not totally nothing – I took a shine to k d lang’s “Hungry Bird” and wanted to put it in a show. So grab a snack and enjoy that song, plus others by The Cleaners From Venus, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Josh Teskey & Ash Grunwald, The Taxpayers, Duran Duran, Florence + The Machine, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, Sinéad O’Connor, Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and Dead Cowboys.

In celebration of the first week of what we were beginning to think we’d never see, this week’s show features songs about trials, hush money, testimony, witnesses, evidence, judges and intimidation games. It was tempting to include sleeping, snoring and farting too but it’s only a one-hour show. With songs from Susan Tedeschi, Robbie Robertson, Sifa, Marvin Gaye, Lake Street Dive, Peter Paul & Mary, Norizin, Parliament, Eilen Jewell, Old Crow Medicine Show, Claire Anne Taylor, Dragon and Sarah McLachlan

There are quite a few songs out there that were written for someone, to the extent they became “Song for…” or “So-and-so’s Song.” And this show features 13 of them. With tracks from case/lang/veirs, John Martyn, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Shawn Mullins, Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women, Jackson Browne, Herbs, Fairport Convention, Simon & Garfunkel, Brian Eno, Fleetwood Mac, The Jayhawks, and last week’s Live Gig Hour performer, Joe Ely.

A day before last week’s show, I learned of the death of the legendary British drummer Gerry Conway. This week I’m paying tribute by playing tracks that hopefully cover some of the vast breadth of music he played on over the years, including his 1970s stint as regular drummer for Yusuf/Cat Stevens and his 1998-2022 tenure with Fairport Convention. Plus tracks from Eclection, Steeleye Span, Fotheringay, Mundy-Turner, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Iain Matthews, Joan Armatrading, Jim Capaldi, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, and The Bunch.

Pedestrian crossings have been in the news this week, especially rainbow ones. The New Plymouth rainbow crossing was used to promote the upcoming Pride Week (8-14 April). Meanwhile similar ones in Gisborne and Auckland were vandalised by the Density – sorry - Destiny Church and subsequently repainted bigger and brighter.
So this Easter Sunday show will feature songs about crossings and crossing over, by John Hiatt, Tift Merritt, Gurf Morlix, Tracy Chapman, Dave Dobbyn, Patti Page, The Black Sorrows, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Jefferies, The Band, Johnny Clegg & Savuka, The Spooky Men’s Chorale, and Coulson Dean McGuinness Flint.

These past few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind for Sue and me, in the lead-up to our wedding this Saturday. Though not a whirlwind romance (we’ve waited two years!), we have been somewhat swept away, so this week’s show is all about whirlwinds, tornadoes, hurricanes and whirlpools. This Friday was International Women’s Day. I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel it didn’t get enough pre-publicity, as I didn’t know about it until Friday itself. So I’ll give it some post-publicity on Sunday, with a show full of songs by international women from Cameroon, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland, Japan, Finland, Canada, Scotland, France, Jamaica, The Netherlands, Australia, the USA and good ol’ Aotearoa. This week I discovered – and sat through five consecutive times – the hold music at Immigration NZ. It is truly dire. There are entire Reddit threads about how awful it is, and even a Spinoff article exposing how it was made and who made it (spoiler alert: it was made in-house, using their own employees). It would literally put you off coming to live here – which might be the intention. Then a Facebook friend suggested a couple of songs that could be on Immigration NZ’s playlist. I started adding to it and, before I knew it, I had more than enough songs for a show.
So have your passport and other supporting documentation ready and take your place in the queue as we hear songs about immigrants, refugees and foreigners, by Sara Bareilles & John Legend, Gogol Bo****lo, Led Zeppelin, Marion Williams, The Eagles, Richard & Linda Thompson, Sarah Blasko, Wings, Hozier, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Katleen Scheir, Luke Thompson and Robin Lane.
Honorable mentions for Genesis (“Illegal Alien”) and Jim Reeves (“Make the World Go Away”), who didn’t quite make the cut.

In these grim, divisive times, it’s more important than ever to hang onto the things we can be thankful for. So over this Waitangi weekend, let’s be thankful for our health, for friends and whānau, and the things we hold to be true. While we’re about it, let’s be thankful for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Talking Heads, Mr Lee Grant, Ba*****ed Ladies, Fairport Convention, Dido, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Bonnie Raitt, Sam & Dave, Sly & The Family Stone, Flaming Lips, The James Gang, Big Star, and Leonard Cohen.

Looking out at some of the disturbing trends pervading society at present - the US Republican primaries, Aotearoa’s own current retrogressive ménage à trois – I can’t help thinking we’d be better off escaping into a world of imagination and fantasy, rather than face the illusions and delusions that are fast becoming reality, policy and law. So this week, join me as I head off into a parallel world where nothing is what it seems, with Shawn Colvin, Troy Kingi, Adrian Belew, Alicia Keys, The Temptations, The Cure, Hunters & Collectors, Lusaint, Richard Thompson, Traffic, Kirsty MacColl, Joe Walsh, and Earth Wind & Fire.
