Afreketé • Yambú - Guaguancó. Afreketé is a musical group dedicated to the research and interpretation of ancestral rhythms of Afro-Cuban origin, coming from the different African religions that were brought to the island of Cuba during the time of slavery. The repertoire includes a musical tour of the different polytheistic ethnic groups and religions that still exist today on the island, Yoruba, Bantu, Abakuá and Arará. Percussion and voice are the main elements of the proposal where the Hispanic influence is also evident in some of its touches especially in the rhythms of popular origin such as rumba, mozambique or carnival conga. The proposal was born as a continuation of the teaching work carried out by Nan Mercader, a Latin percussion teacher at Esmuc and a student of the Afro-Cuban music combo. Congas, bongos, timbales, bata drums, shekere, maracas and skeletons are its main instruments. The magical and spiritual songs, the strength of the drums, the hypnotic rhythms that lead to the paroxysm and above all the strength of the tribe and improvisation are the most prominent elements in the proposal. Cinco Changüiseros - Part 1 Nino Olivares (marímbula player - Grupo Changüí de Guantánamo) "Cinco Changüiseros" is a musical documentary about Changüí - the traditional dance party music of Guantánamo Province, Cuba. Today's Salsa music and dance branched out from the vibrant tradition of Cuban Son. It is said that Changüí is the mother of the Son. Part 1 Nino Olivares This first of five parts of "Cinco Changüiseros" features the beloved elder of the Changüí community and former marímbula (is a plucked box musical instrument of the Caribbean) player for Grupo Changüí de Guantánamo - Nino Olivares. As the foremost proponent of this unique music, Grupo Changüí has toured extensively throughout Cuba and the world. For almost 50 years, Nino was an anchor member of the group on marímbula - the large box drum with metal keys from the mbira family of instruments that plays the role of the bass in Changüí. === In December of 2004, two novice filmmakers travelled to Eastern Cuba to study and document Changüí. By knocking on doors and making new friends, some of today's best Changüí musicians gladly gave interviews in their homes and performed in intimate settings. In this way, five central changüiseros shared their personal stories and illuminated the nature of this frequently mentioned, yet seldom understood music and dance form.
