Nau mai haere mai ki te whānau a Takitoru, hei nui ake te tira kaitautoku kaupapa.

Welcoming Tony Pecotic (Te Arawa, Tainui) to the Whare Creative and Takitoru teams. Tony is a lover of language, speaking Māori, English, Croatian and Japanese.

As Pouako / (Head Teacher) for ten years in a Kohanga Reo in the Rotorua region, Tony has developed programmes teaching te Reo Māori into small communities. As well as teaching te reo Māori, he is also a painter, weaver and carver, and a composer of waiata, haka, and moteatea - tutoring and performing in Kapa Haka in international festivals in Europe, UK and Ireland.

“Having mixed heritage, my father is an immigrant who came from Croatia to New Zealand in the 60s and my mother has Māori/English heritage - this has afforded me the ability to navigate the grey areas between cultures.

“I was raised with a love of culture and language, with my formative years spent with my Māori grandmother, and this was where the basis in Te Reo Māori and tikanga was imbued. This has been the constant base I have built upon through my life,” says Tony.

Stoked that our client Dr Hassan Mubark is a semi-finalist for Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year. Ka rawe!

Dr Hassan Mubark is a distinguished rheumatologist with over 30 years of experience, known for his pioneering work in regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal health.

Specialising in Expanded Adult Stem Cell Therapy, Hassan provides patients with alternatives to invasive surgery – significantly improving pain management and quality of life. His innovative approach has led to remarkable successes, including game-changing results such as healing a fully torn shoulder tendon in a 71-year-old patient as a world 1st case, and supporting high performance athletes, using safe, non-surgical, locally injected regenerative medicine.

We have loved working alongside Toi Ohomai, the largest tertiary provider in the Bay of Plenty and the third largest institute of technology in New Zealand, with some design mahi for their Wāhine Maia (brave women) kaupapa, a space for wāhine in the trades, to network and feel supported.

The whakaaro behind our design was based on both moko kauae (tradition female chin markings/ tattoo) and Mangopare (Hammer-head Shark).

Combined, this design represents the strength wāhine needs to grow their presence in what is a tāne-dominated industry.

Gender equity in trades is important for many reasons, including 1. breaks down stereotypes (i.e. what jobs are appropriate for wāhine vs tāne). 2. creates more inclusive workplaces 3. encourages role models and mentors 4. addresses any future skill shortages. All of the beforementioned benefits the individual and our hāpori.

This kaupapa was important to us and we are so proud of our teams result.
