It is with sadness that we learnt of the passing of Ray Thompson founder of Cloud 9 Screen Entertainment. Ray came to New Zealand back in the late 1990's to set up Cloud 9 and produce the Enid Blyton Adventure Series along with The Tribe and a range of other Children's TV. Ray made a significant impact to the Wellington region with his TV production activities and connections and continued to manage Cloud 9 and its extensive library of content until recent times.

Ray was a respected friend and colleague to many in the industry and particularly those at Avalon Studios that worked alongside him and the Cloud 9 team.

Ray was always a fantastic host at Tirohana Estate Winery and we always enjoyed catching up. Our sympathies to his family.

Beloved, respected and cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, confidante, mentor, motivator, inspiration and guiding light, Ray passed away suddenly but peacefully in his sleep in Australia on January 15th, 2025. It's been a busy few months at Avalon while we have used the winter months to make some exciting improvements to brighten up the office spaces. All the office space and studios are available now. We're gearing up for a busy summer period with a couple of local productions but always have space for more so come and visit!"

Linda Niccol’s Poppy has won the Cannes Ecrans Seniors competition at an annual competitive film screening organised by the city and the Cannes Seniors Club, during the Cannes Film Festival ✨

Announced in le film français, the films were selected by Bernard Bories, president of Cinéma des Antipodes which screens New Zealand and Australian films in an annual showcase at St Tropez.

Poppy received a trophy from a jury of cinephiles headed by French director Emmanuelle Dubergey.

Poppy is the story of a young woman with Down syndrome who refuses to be defined by disability and determines to pursue her dream to be a motor mechanic. The jury noted the moving, fresh and dynamic story and its luminescent and powerful lead actress.
