UPDATE 5:05pm: SH1 at Edendale is now open after the earlier accident. Due to this accident, Highways South will not be going ahead with the planned closure tonight (Sunday) between 8-10pm for chipsealing.

Due to a crash, SH1 at Edendale is closed. Detour for light vehicles via Homestead and Hilda Roads. HPMV/Heay vehicles continue through to Edendale and use Coal Pit Road. Update to follow once highway has re-opened. More to come.

FATAL CRASH
One person has died in a crash on Niagara-Tokanui Highway at Quarry Hills, Southland, last night.

About 8.35pm, emergency services were informed that a ute had rolled, between McManus Roa and Quarry Hills Fortification Road.

Sadly, one person died at the scene.

The two other occupants received critical and serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and Police are providing support to the victims’ whānau.
