A colossal blow, offering more Agricultural jobs in Southland. Then somehow moved to Christchurch. And now cancelled?

A plant-based alternative milk factory was initially planned for Southland, then it was revealed it was heading to Canterbury, and now it appears it won't happen at all.

““I was really worried people would be scared to try it but I only had one lady ask what was in it or how it could be vegan, and she ended up buying something ... there are more people out there [that are vegan] than you realise, they are just not making a lot of noise, there is a huge demand for it down here,” Jessinta said.”

““I often remind people that sugar is vegan ... some people are ‘anti-vegan’ or come in with all these pre-conceptions ... but we have had such a positive response, there is demand, and people are open to trying it.””

An Invercargill couple have started a fully vegan bakery, and by summer expect to have plant-based cheese rolls and pies on the menu.

More than a decade m in the making 🙂 ““We know that oats grow well in Southland, and being low in water use, land use and emissions, they are an excellent raw ingredient for an environmentally sustainable alternative-milk option.”

At the moment 80% of the oat milk drunk in New Zealand is imported from overseas, despite oats being grown in New Zealand.”

The Government has backed Southland-based oat milk producer New Zealand Functional Foods through a $6 million investment.
