Once again the Royal New Zealand Ballet brings the sparkle to the festive season – tonight’s opening of A Midsummer Night’s Dream cast a special spell on the Isaac Theatre Royal. The company, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Tracy Grant Lord’s magical set and Kendall Smith’s shimmering lighting reprise a ballet that well deserves its place in the repertoire. Three more chances to see it!

RNZB - Solace: dance to feed your soul

This weekend brings a trio of premieres to Christchurch as the Royal New Zealand Ballet presents Solace: dance to feed your soul, with new and recent works by Wayne McGregor, Sarah Foster-Sproull and Alice Topp.

Britain’s Wayne McGregor is one of the most exciting choreographers on the world stage, and the New Zealand premiere of his Infra, created for London’s Royal Ballet in 2008, represents an artistic coup for the RNZB.

Choreographed for an ensemble of twelve uniquely gifted dancers at the height of their powers, and set to a slowly drifting, soulful score by Max Richter, Infra is a profoundly moving meditation on the loneliness, connections and consolations that lie beneath the teeming surface of the city. Julian Opie’s mesmerising LED artwork echoes the constant movement of the dancers below as a steady stream of anonymous figures walk purposefully towards destinations that are forever unknown.

What a treat! The Royal New Zealand Ballet has brought Christchurch’s very own production of Swan Lake back home to the Isaac Theatre Royal and with tonight’s premiere revived Russell Kerr’s sublime choreography and Kristian Fredrikson’s exquisite designs.

With the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s classic score, this is not to be missed. Four more performances, ending with a matinee on Sunday.

COME ON, GET HOPPY! // For beer lovers, March means the hop harvest and the only chance for the next 12 months to try a Fresh Hop brew. At Three Boys Brewery, the team have been hard at it, with hops fresh from the vine being delivered in the morning and going into the brew within hours, where they impart an intense green dankness otherwise lost once the hops are dried for storage. Three Boys have two Fresh Hop brews available, a Hazy and a Golden Ale. Get ‘em while they’re fresh!
