So good to catch up again with so many friends at such a wonderful launch of this first (that we are aware of) commercially published book of portraits, sketches, photos and memoir by a New Zealand artist/doctor portraying ordinary people while he was on active duty in the Vietnam War.

We had such a good night yesterday at the launch of Portrait of a War Artist by John Gillies, published by Quentin Wilson Publishing. What an interesting book and talented author/artist! We still have some signed copies, come in and get yours after Easter, or order online here: https://ubscan.co.nz/product/portrait-of-a-war-artist/. Quentin Wilson Publishing

“An engrossing read about love, loss, resilience and, above all, trusting your instincts. Karen McMillan skilfully draws readers into a world that’ll have you rooting for the protagonists the whole way through.” – Kelly Dennett, Sunday Star Times

Judges' comments for the two QWP NZ Booklovers Fiction Shortlist titles:
Double Jeopardy by Stef Harris: ‘A character-driven revenge thriller and an exhilarating ride, this is a great piece of storytelling with broad appeal. In choosing to set the action in the United States, specifically Boston, Harris is in the company of other Kiwi genre authors who are (presumably) thinking about the accessibility of their work and the creative promise of a much vaster landscape, which in this case allows him to draw on the city’s fascinating history and criminal underbelly. Every ingredient is here and ideally balanced, making it one of the top crime thrillers of the year.’

Light Keeping by Adrienne Jansen: ‘This moving and tender novel draws you in from the beautiful cover to the poignant end page. Light Keeping is a subtle and beautifully written tale that explores loss, the importance of family, storytelling and the sea, and stays with you long after finishing the final page. The author’s writing is so artful that she can handle even the darkest moments in the novel with delicacy and sensitivity that feels true to life. Beautiful and moving.’

MILA is an Aotearoa New Zealand book that touches on many international themes, but we here at QWP were delighted to note the highlighting in the review of bush, birds, place and time - just a stunning review that makes it all worthwhile. Today marks one month until the launch for my upcoming novel with Quentin Wilson Publishing and I thought a brilliant way to celebrate would be to reveal the cover for ‘Light Keeping’.

‘Light Keeping’ follows grandparents Bill and Annie, lighthouse keepers who are now the carers of their orphaned grandchildren, Robert and Jess.

The cover designer Jemma Morrison is a Whitireia Publishing student and has captured the essence of ‘Light Keeping’ with her keen eye.

Great to see Lauren Roche's beautiful QWP novel being added to such book groups as this:

//FICTION NZ// Mila’s family hail from Northland, and with their happy home and their proximity to a nearby forest, she has an idyllic childhood. But for every idyll, there is its counterpart, and the grief and trauma that visit the family cause Mila to seek exile in Auckland. But the lure of the north eventually draws Mila back to accept the mantle of healer.

Compelling and emotionally engaging, this story considers the complex issues of guilt and grief, and the healing and peace available through the natural world.

Comments from BDS Reviewers

"A very original story. Very engrossing - I couldn't put it down."

"I liked the characters and picturing their lives in a close-knit community in beautiful rural surrounds."

"The chapters are short and encourage you to read one more, one more - to find out how things pan out for a loving family hit by tragedy."

"It's a compelling story, well told and with a mostly satisfying conclusion."

"The story is told with compassion bred with experience, and it is heavily influenced by the author's life."

"The characters are real and the reader can empathise with them all."

"The author has a gift for describing the forest and things natural. This acts as a balance for the description of the tragic events and their aftermath."

This title is also offered as part of the Narrative Muse Book Club
