Kiwi Gardener

Kiwi Gardener "The magazine for gardeners who like to get their hands dirty!"
New Zealand owned and operated. Kiwi Gardener is a growing resource for all gardeners.

Originally Weekend Gardener, today's monthly magazine offers more than ever before. Features on growing plants (natives, flowers, trees) and edibles (vegetables, fruit, nuts, herbs) are presented as guides to all that can be added to the garden that month. While inspiring feature gardens, community gardens and articles on everyday Kiwi gardeners show us how it's done. Kiwi Gardener connects with green thumbs across the country.

Get ready to spring it on! We share all you need to know to get your spring sowing off to a brilliant start this month, as well as revealing our top tips for preparing your garden beds for productive growing. If you want to see a real-life growing journey taking shape, you may enjoy reading about Wellington Garden in Lower Hutt, which is part of the Secret Gardens NZ network. Elsewhere, Wildwood Flowers in Dunedin enchants us with the artistry inherent in Robyn McMurray’s gorgeous floral arrangements. If flowers are front of mind, it’s time to dig deep and learn more about lilies and how to grow them. And if you need even more green-fingered wisdom, we provide the lowdown on low-maintenance houseplants and share advice on how to change up your lawn to create an alternative garden carpet.

Now our August issue is out, we’re excited to share the results of our 2025 Bird Photo Competition. We loved reading about the stories behind the photos, too – thank you to everyone who entered and shared the where, when, what and how that explained the origins of their beautiful images. We hope you enjoy perusing the winners – and good luck if you entered!
It’s also time to put spring in our sights. As winter draws to a close, we have plenty of insight to share about preparing the vege garden for spring, from growing potatoes and planting strawberries to sowing under cover. August is also a good time to plant roses, so be inspired as we dish the dirt on the new releases that may be prettifying gardens across the country this year. And if you want to add even more green to your spring garden, we suggest some ideas for green-flowered plants that deserve a place in the limelight.
If the future holds the promise of potatoes and sunshine-filled days, then there are good times ahead in the garden. Happy growing!
