Well, this is an interesting one! This July we’re throwing our morals and ethics aside for our latest genre, EARNESTLY PRO-CAPITALISM!

That’s right - none of this capitalist critique bu****it like SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, FIGHT CLUB or TRIANGLE OF SADNESS, we’re going all in, it’s all about the bottom line, and you bet your ass these workers are getting nowhere near the means of production.

Our Earnestly Pro-Capitalist film will take inspiration from other movies which directly or indirectly celebrate the free market and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, like THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, JERRY MAGUIRE, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS or, on a deeper level, pretty much any Marvel or STAR WARS movie crapped out by Disney+ these days.

This month’s film will be directed by ODG found and staunch capitalist, Alexander “AJ” Jones

Ian is a multi award winning director, writer and filmmaker, who has been behind some of the most iconic commercial campaigns, music videos and short films in New Zealand and beyond.

CITRON CAST ANNOUNCEMENT:

Kimberley is a lifelong actress and musician, working in music and theatre since childhood.   She studied Acting & Improvisation at Stage Centre since the age of 12 and went on to study classical singing at Otago University, graduating with a Bachelor of Musical Arts.  Now based in Christchurch, highlights of her career thus far have included Cosette (Les Miserables 2018), Ilse (Spring Awakening 2023), and working with Playspace Productions since 2020 as Isabella (The Last Martini 2021), Olivia (My Nightmare Wedding 2022), and Francine (Murder! At the Hotel Le Bon 2023).  She now leads alternative rock band daytrip as a singer-songwriter, and in 2024 reprises the role of Cosette in Les Miserables, this time on the Ashburton stage.  

On the French side of things, one time when she was 12 she went to Paris and was so consistently spoken to in fluent French by strangers that she decided she ought to learn.  She is both intimidated and honoured to be dusting off her French for Citron.  🍋

CITRON CAST ANNOUNCMENT: Sam Gibson is the comedic triple threat; funny, energetic, and owns 3 Judith Collins fridge magnets. Sam is a stand-up comedian/actor/theatre tech/whatever-else-you-need based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. He has just returned to the city off the back of a festival run of his show Some Regrets, including performances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and a sold-out season at the New Zealand Fringe Festival in which it was nominated for Best Solo Performance.

Sam's previous outing with One Dollar Genre was as Brody in Too Cool for Christmas. Since then he has been described by Theatreview, the Star Observer Australia, and One News as "gay", so it was only natural that he play the character of "husband" in a film set in the 1960s.

Sam is a member of the Dan Bain's Improv Seduction troupe, and can regularly be found in Comedy shows across the Christchurch CBD. Keep up with what he's doing next at .

Get ready to solve some mysteries and come of age everyone, because this month we’re pedalling back to the nostalgic 80s drenched genre of KIDS ON BIKES!

Pioneered by the films of Stephen Spielberg and the books of Stephen King, stories from this genre typically focus on foul-mouthed youths exploring the dark corners of their small American towns, learning harsh lessons about life, the world, and what may lie beyond. As such, our film will take inspiration from the classics of this niche subgenre like E.T, STAND BY ME, IT, THE GOONIES or STRANGER THINGS.

Or maybe it will just be about kids on bikes!

Our May film will be directed by our first ever guest director, Andrew Todd (), a multi-award winning filmmaker and co-director of the feature film GHOST SHARK 2: URBAN JAWS.
