𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧 💪🥇

In our Summer edition we talk to Motueka-based fencing veteran John Noakes (Noksee) who has won the Legend Award at the 2024 FCANZ Awards

Held on the Thursday night of the association’s annual conference, the award recognises the high quality of his work, his flexibility and positive attitude and contribution to training young fencing contractors.

With a varied and very rewarding career, John has travelled all around the country and met some ‘fantastic people’ and the job has kept him physically active well into his late 60’s.

“It was a surprise that’s for sure. I’ve been in the industry a long time and met a lot of people and done a wide variety of jobs but you never really expect any awards or anything like that. I am still quite involved in training and am passionate about the industry,” John says.

Eric Laurenson’s Lammerlaw Romney Stud is known for its hardy hill rams with exceptional wool and all-round performance and he is looking forward to having his first on farm sale this Thursday! 🐏🔖

In the Mackenzie Country, is where he and partner Lynsey McIntosh have their 170-hectare rolling hills farm and stud operation and up until now, he has sold via private treaty. There will be 50-60 high quality Romney and Romdale rams up for grabs at the sale.

“We are doing this to help get a few more people across the cattle stop and up the drive, just to find some new clients and build some more good, long-term relationships with other farmers from around the district would be ideal,” Eric says.

Never did the Newhaven Perendale Sheep Genetics New Zealand team think for a moment 30 years ago that David Ruddenklau’s decision to breed a sheep that required very little anthelmintic drenching (and eventually no drench) would be a game-changer for the New Zealand sheep sector. 🐑🏔

The 1990s were a hard time in the farming sector, let alone in North Otago - an area that spent most of the decade in debilitating drought. This however marked the start of the renowned ‘Newhaven Nil-Drench regime’. Fast-forward to today where Blair and Jane Smith (nee Ruddenklau) are at the helm of Newhaven, one of the largest nil-drench Perendale, Romdale and Perendale-Texel stud operations in the country.
