Sadly the world lost one of the best and most balanced entrepreneurial minds of our time over the weekend.

Tony Hsieh was a phenomenal leader who redesigned Company Culture - his book “Discovering Happiness” changed the way I looked at KPI’s, conduct and staff in general.

His company Zappos has been used as a benchmark and example crossing many industry stereotypes. If you haven’t heard of him or the Zappos story I highly recommend looking into it.

We had a blast recently creating content for the crew at Strathclyde NZ.

Caleb our videographer basically shadowed Managing Director Scott for the day and has so far managed to create 5 stand alone videos and a bunch of photos from the day's Content.

None of the videos are scripted, they're natural, authentic Vlog style footage, it captures the culture and the passion for their work perfectly! - this is a super efficient way to get a lot of content whilst basically going about your normal day to day work.

I admit it... the facts in this video are wrong 😔 but I do have a question for you...

I should of checked the source of my research before making this point.

This is an excerpt from the first live Content Club Workshop.

The Workshop had 3 goals...

1) Demystify Social Media.
2) Explain why Video is still the King of Content.
3) Teach a Content Creation Formula that would spark tonnes of Content ideas.

Hopefully I got my 3 goals right because the fact I had wrong was that the global TV Ad industry is way bigger than the $80B I quoted in this video, it’s closer to $200B!!

So now that I’ve cleared that up... Answer me this...???

Tip #6 YOU!

Now that all the technical stuff is out the way, you've got a great script thought out (and practiced) you can really focis on your performance.

Now, I'm not suggesting that you actually perform... Studies have shown that Authentic Content ie: the real you, works best... Remember, you're using this video to market your business in the hope that someone sees it and wants to actually do business with you... At some point, (depending on your service) you're actually going to talk to them or meet them in person... it doesn't really make sense for you to not represent the real you on Video.

From a "performance" angle what you can focus on is your eye contact, body language and smile - If you look passionate about what you're doing that will really draw an audience in.

The best content is often about what problems you solve for your existing (and future) clients.

We all have pain points in life and if your product or service relieves some pain zero in on who those people are and start educating them.

Selling will take care of itself if you put the right information in front of those in need.

Tip #5 SCRIPT

The biggest mistake people make with their scripts is they write it in a language that is not their own! You want to keep your conversation style to the way you would be infront of an actual customer... because the point of the video is to have more opportunities to be infront of real customers :)

Other common script problems...

- Too long
- Too detailed (social media is all about small snackable bits of content)
- No thought out CTA (call to action) or Outro, so it ends weirdly or abruptly.
- Too salesy, stick to subjects that will actually help your customer avatar.

I'm not a fan of seeing people reading off a piece of paper or teleprompter - you want to connect to the audience, it's hard to do that if you're not looking dead in the camera lens! Plus, when we're reading we generally speak more formerly and less natural.

Just remember, you're an expert at your chosen profession - let your knowledge and information just flow... don't overthink it - Just do it!!

Tip #4 HEADROOM!

Background (check)
Lighting (check)
Sound (check)

Right, now you need to put yourself in the shot... will you sit in the middle? Or off to one side?

Do you need to leave space for graphics or other effects during the editing process?

A great start-point rule is to pop 4 fingers on the top of your head (just like in this video) and position yourself so your top finger is at the top of the screen.

This is not a hard fast rule but as I said above a great starting point - equally important is the angle the phone is on - We always suggest that your lens should be at eye level or ust above.

In fact, this super famous quote came from a time long before Social Media even existed... and it couldn't be truer today.

As consumers we have more choice than ever before and we've made it pretty clear that we don't like Ads - yet Marketers keep ramming them down our necks (it's all part of the game really).

Think about this...

We turned off our TV and watched Netflix instead.
We switched off the Radio and listened to Spotify.
Most Newspapers and Magazines have gone out of business.
Email open rates are the lowest in history.

It's pretty clear that we don't like ads and that we're getting more savvy about spotting them.

Businesses need to pivot their marketing so that their Content is A) More Useful ie: Valuable to the audience - this could be Tips and Tricks, How to guides etc or B) More Entertaining and Authentic!

This is how you win over time.

When I say attention I'm talking about Likes, Shares, Follows, Engagement, Reach etc.

Think about it... Blogs and Pictures don't go Viral do they??

But there's more to these stats than meets the eye... Video's are also...

- Cheaper to run ad campaigns behind
- More memorable
- A great way to show more personality behind the brand
- Creates instant familiarity.

I first met Lorraine years ago and I remember her telling me, way back then, that doing holistic retreats focusing on fitness, mindset, nutrition and so much more was the BIG dream!

I was asked about editing tips on photos the other day by some of our Content Club Members... there's two parts to this.

1. You could focus on gear, software, filters and apps.
2. You could focus on capturing images in unique ways.

Here's some great examples of pictures captured in unique ways that will have you looking twice... they aren't technically great pics but the angles, timing and vision by the photographers are definitely worth checking out.

We all carry around a really powerful camera in our pockets these days and being digital, there's really no reason to not take a tonne of pics and review them later on.

Despite putting out hundreds of pieces of Content over the past couple of years for SIGN NETWORK LIMITED - this video remains our most viewed piece (organically).

The point I'm trying to make here is don't take yourself too seriously... Social Media is about having a bit of fun...

Does this Video sell anything... NO!

Is this Video "valuable" to the audience... NO!

Have I had heaps of engagement both online and in "real" life about whether this was fake or setup... YES!

Has it created an impression and been memorable... YES!
.. and has this lead on to other conversations about our products and services... YES!

What you'll see here in this list are the most common excuses I've heard from business owners to why they are not producing content.

I added one (in a different colour) - see if you can figure out which one it is??

The thing with excuses are they are just that... often masking the real reason and always just holding us back.

The reality is if you're not producing Content for your business in 2020 you're going backwards and if you're the business owner, then, unfortunately, YOU are the problem.

I've seen content on social media work successfully for every industry niche you could think of... there are no excuses, it is 2020, the time is now... if you need help, that's what we are here for!

Paralysis by Analysis!

This will be the Number 1 thing holding you back from dominating your Social Media content.

Are you overthinking it?

Do you have a need for everything to line up and be perfect?

Do you have a camera roll full of photos and videos you haven't posted yet?

Are you constantly comparing and not feeling good enough?

STOP IT.

That's all the advice I have for you... it couldn't be more simple... just STOP IT.

The only thing that matters is what your audience thinks of your content... if you never show it to them, you'll never know.

Nothing feels better than taking ACTION - Post something today.

We’ve been trialling loads of different length videos for our pals over at Wrap Network.

15 secs, 30 secs, 60 secs and more.

Studies have shown the the attention span of a new audience is getting shorter and shorter, so you really have to grab them on the first few seconds.

Once you’ve converted your audience to fans or followers, they’re more than likely to watch your longer form content.

Each industry and audience will be different, the key is to experiment and check your insights for patterns

We’ve also switched a lot of the Wrap Network content to portrait as we’ve noticed a high percentage of their audience are consuming content on mobile devices... portrait simply takes up more of the screen which keeps people a little more engaged as there’s less distraction.

However all of these tips are pointless if the content is no good 😉

Use it to your advantage and you’ll have people wanting to know more.

Too many businesses and brands are just ramming their Sales messages down your throat on social media.

You have the ability to show your business from so many angles... behind the scenes, meet the team, tour of the office/site/factory, testimonial and project overview stories, FAQ’s, tools of the trade etc etc... there’s no need to go straight in for the jugular!

Social Media is all about engagement, story-telling and conversations... done well this will lead to conversions, you’ve just got to have a little patience 😜

Rather than trying to “make the sale” maybe your goal should be to make someone think differently, or laugh, or empathise... the more emotionally people connect with you the more likely they are to buy, refer and remain watching.

Create the Buzz and the bees will come!

One of the biggest mistakes many business owners make when it comes to Marketing is they forget to keep it simple...

Remember, you need to keep repeating your Core Message over and over to your current and potential customers just to remind them that you still exist and that you're open for business!

Make sure you remember to tell them what you do - sounds simple right?? Often the best way to articulate "what you do" is by explaining the problem that you solve for your customers.

Here at The Content Club we make Video easy by training Business Owners on how to overcome their fear of being on camera and teaching them how to convey their message to the right audience - this saves them money and increases their conversion on leads.

We took 2 cameras to our latest shoot with Scott and the team at Strathclyde NZ which gave us the ability to show a little behind the scenes action.

A big part of the Civil Construction on this project relates to this driveway and access to the site, so we had Scott and his trusty work mate walk in the entrace a couple of different ways... leading shots, following shots, close-ups (featuring feet only, focusing on the driveway cracks etc).

All of these shots won't make the final edit but it will give us the luxury of choice when it comes to putting this whole video together.

How do you shoot Video and get the footage so smooth?

This is a question we get asked often.... followed by what gimbal do you recomend.

A gimbal is a camera stabaliser... there's plenty of them on the market and they now have a huge range available for mobile phones too.

We use the Zhiyan Crane brand and I've heard really good things about the DJI Osmo (for mobile devices).

How Did We Get Here?

After being in the physical, tangible end of the Branding/Advertising/Marketing Game for over 20 years we’ve taken all of the knowledge and lessons learned there and put them into our services and this educational platform we call The Content Club.

Marketing is the toughest it’s ever been... there are so many platforms, products and differing advice out there it’s hard to know where to even start! Also, the way Marketing is Sold is generally full of jargon and fear-based statements to make us feel stupid and “act now” before we miss out on the special (too good to be true) deal!

We focus on educating SME business owners on how to create their own content and cut out the middle man... at the end of the day the world is crying out for authentic content and most business owners are looking to save money, not spend it!

Of course, we offer a paid service too... but, by the time you need us to create your content, you would have built an audience, have a pretty good understanding of your customer avatar(s) and your brand voice and have some social proof that Social Media is working for your business - So your paid content will get you exponential results on top of a foundation that, through our guidance, we helped you build - for yourself!
