Blog Writing, Website Writing and Copy Writing
Humans have invented words and languages to communicate meaningfully. In this melee, words are often understood differently by different people. So I request my readers to not focus on the three titles of the concepts, and instead focus on the concepts.π
Blog Writing:
Also known as article writing, this concept focuses on a topic in depth. The writer needs to research on the topic, structure it interestingly and ensure at least 1200 words of non-plagiarised content. SEO is critical because the objective of blogs is to organically rank the site well to bring in incremental visitors.
Blogs as a strategy, as we see today, is slightly transactional and is loosely connected with the brandβs positioning strategy.
There are definitely scope to be creative in blog writing, as story telling is an effective content strategy. However with AI there is a risk that AI will drive your creativity into linearity without you realising the same. The comfort zone of linear thinking is addictivπ₯Ί
Website Writing:
Writing a website is significantly different from blog writing. It is a skill where we need to conceptualise the website, right from wire framing and prototyping to development. This skill, as I understand from a creative website agency perspective - cannot be outsourced to a freelancer. A website writer drives the website development process by brainstorming with the client servicing, designer, developer and even the SEO expert in order to get it strategically and creatively correct.
A website writer needs to have a grounded understanding of advertising and marketing strategies, consumer behaviour understanding and curious enough to be a well read aware personality.
A website writer needs to be comfortable talking and arguing with the client to advise the best website strategy to the client.
There is scope for immense creativity which is driven by a marketing objective and a marketing cm communications strategy. AI has a minimalist role in website writing. You can use UI to shorten long content and to write the obvious paragraphs in pages like the contact page. Using AI blatantly for website writing is a sure shot recipe for disaster.
Copy Writing
Also called creative copy writing, it primarily refers to the skill of writing headline and short paragraphs on newspaper ads, hoardings etc. This style of writing is also significantly different from the other two writing skills.
The skill demands out of the box thinking, deep insights into consumers and the products or services being advertised, and the art of appealing to the attitude/motivations/cultural triggers of the TG.
A hero banner in the home page of a skin care clinic in Guwahati may have a headline βBest Skin Care Clinic in Guwahatiβ or a headline like βWe help you express yourselfβ. The latter is a (bad π) example of creative copy writing; but I hope I am able to explain the difference between technical writing and copy writing.
Creative copy writers are usually great in thinking taglines, captions and smart copy to attract eyeballs π effectively. However, there is a chance of going too creative and get the brand name overshadowed. You will remember the story of the ad but unable to remember the brand.π€¨
