“On the surface Jenny & the Eddies appears to be a fairy tale with colourful, exciting drawings that will appeal to young children. However, the deeper message about the importance of vaccinations will also appeal to teenagers and adults.

Dr Clinghan is a general practitioner who was inspired to write and draw Jenny & the Eddies after the New Zealand measles epidemic in 2019.

His new book aims to promote vaccine safety, addressing conspiracy theories in a non-confrontational and engaging way, and providing new ways to talk about viruses and vaccines. In Jenny & the Eddies, he imagines what a vaccine and virus might look like based on their behaviour and the qualities they embody. The viruses are represented by the forest monsters, who are silent, stalk their victims, attack quickly and cause indiscriminate suffering.

The vaccine is represented by Eddie, a dog-like creature. Eddie is always vigilant, brave, and loyal. He has a great memory, and even if our memories have faded he will protect us for the rest of our lives. My five minutes of fame is going to be six! Appearing on the AM show on Friday 7:40 am TV3 talking about vaccine hestitancy. I'm broadcasting live from home so hopefully, the kids won't crash the interview!

Jenny and The Eddies was the first book we launched under our publishing imprint label 'Beyond the Ledge Press.'

We worked with Richard through the self publishing process to bring his book to life as he handed us his script and black and white artwork. We found the prefect Colourist, designer and comic artist Eddie Monotone from Auckland to transform his line work into vibrant full colour imagery. And then we provided the lettering (speech bubbles), book layout, cover design, and helped revise the script to read better across the artwork. And finally provided the printing of his book!
