I was reading a recent post that was very thought provoking, as it was trying to define the difference between motion graphics and traditional animation. It was wonderful & sometimes amusing to read everyone's thoughts & opinions about what Motion Graphics or Motion Design really is (the newly coined term "Motionator" was one such thought in the thread).
An interesting thing I came away with, was the question:
"Is Motion Design for Entertainment?" I would argue, yes it can be.
Is Motion Graphics simply where Design & Animation meet?
Here's an example of Motion Graphics that's purely for entertainment and sets the mood for an Awards Evening, enjoy!

We've cut together a little sampler of a dramatic motion graphics event opener we made a while back. (We made an opener for the daytime event, and an opener for the evening awards dinner). This immersive event took place in the Barrel Hall at Villa Maria while diners were surrounded with the projection on 3 walls. The theme was Planet NZ. We also had fun doing the sound design.

Here's a really fun video opener we made as part of a motion graphics package for a live streamed event celebrating 10 years of Chorus.
From the script provided, we designed how this would look, providing style frames and a storyboard, then animating. We also arranged and directed the voiceover & cut that into the final edit.
Using motion graphics can be a really impactful way to open an event and create that hype vibe without having to use your own footage.
Check out our website for more details on this motion graphics package.

One year ago we had the privilege of seeing this creative awards project come together on an 80 metre wide projection screen at Otautahi’s fabulous Te Pae Convention Centre.
We hit some milestones that day, it being the inaugural Foodstuffs Partnership Awards, and the start of our new life in the South Island.
We were proud to say that this show held no compromises. We delivered a fully animated motion graphics awards continuity, and hype opener video, along with a walkin loop, full screen 3D hero transitions, and band and entertainment visuals, all at the epic size of 16,800 x 1080 pixels.
We carried the event theming through onto Te Pae’s foyer wayfinding screens, with animated video loops.
The challenge for us was to take the existing Partnership Awards brand and expand upon this to create a visual language for this awards evening that represented the network & connectedness of suppliers and community and the interwoven supply chain.
The brief was to also acknowledge the unique link between the architectural inspiration of Te Pae and the design inspiration that informed the Partnership Awards brand.
We’re truly grateful to have been engaged by such a fantastic client. It was a genuine privilege to be part of the incredible team who brought this immersive event to life.
Check out our website for more images and video of the visuals we created.

Our animated entertainment moment for Interior Awards 2022. A loud, full on mapping show helps kick off the home stretch when you’re almost ‘awardsed out’. Excuse the phone audio.
