More good work from Counties Manukau Police

Seven youths have narrowly avoided a dire outcome after failing to stop near Maraetai.

Just before 5am on Saturday, Police observed a vehicle, believed to be stolen, with multiple youths inside parked on Clevedon Road with its hazards on.

Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Rakana Cook, says the unit activated its lights and sirens however the vehicle took off heading towards Whitford Park Road.

“Police elected not to pursue and the Police Eagle helicopter was able to get overhead to track the vehicle, while also noticing the vehicle had a broken quarter light.

“The vehicle was successfully spiked on Murphys Road, Flat Bush and came to a stop with seven occupants running into a paddock.”

Inspector Cook says all seven were quickly taken into custody without incident.

“This situation could have had a very different outcome.

“It’s exceptionally lucky no one was injured or even killed.

“The reckless actions of this group could have had a catastrophic effect on our community and I hope people realise Police will continue to hold these offenders to account.”

Seven youths, aged 14-17, have been referred to Youth Aid Services.

**POSSIBLE DISRUPTION TO PINE HARBOUR FERRY SERVICE NEXT WEEK**

Around 50 FIRST Union members who work for Auckland-based ferry provider SeaLink have voted to withdraw their labour with rolling strikes from Tuesday 24 September until Tuesday 1 October.

The workers have submitted multiple strike notices to the company, which operates the Pine Harbour-Downtown ferry service.

Justin Wallace, FIRST Union organiser, said workers had not received improvements to wages and conditions that get them in line with what had been provided by Auckland Transport to other contracted ferry services, and it has made the membership feel undervalued.

“There’s a big wage disparity growing on the harbour, and SeaLink FIRST Union members are looking for parity," said Wallace.

“SeaLink’s workers are struggling with the absurd cost of living in Auckland while going to work every day knowing that they are being underpaid compared to colleagues who do the same work as them on different ferry providers.”

Wallace told the PC Times that if the strike does take effect next week, the Pine Harbour ferry service could be impacted.

Another great effort by Counties Manukau Police:

"Man's next stop is court after Clevedon arrest"

A man found himself in the fast lane to court, after coming to Police attention in Papakura last night.

Alongside driving charges, he will appear in court over a number of burglary charges.

Counties Manukau South Area Commander, Inspector Joe Hunter says a vehicle the man was travelling in was sighted on Boundary Road at around 9.30pm.

“The vehicle was of interest, so the unit monitored its movements and direction of travel.

“At the same time the Police Eagle helicopter was deployed to the area and soon took over observations for ground staff.”

Eagle continued to monitor the vehicle until it arrived at a rural Clevedon property.

“Our staff approached the address, and voice appealed to the occupants of the address to come outside,” Inspector Hunter says.

“Six occupants from the address eventually exited from the house and were spoken to by our staff.”

The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

He has since been charged with dangerous driving, as well as three burglary charges for incidents in East Tamaki and Mt Wellington in March.

The man is expected in the Manukau District Court today.

“I want to acknowledge the work of the various Police staff involved in last night’s incident in ensuring it was resolved safely,” Inspector Hunter says.

“It has also meant we have put the man before the Court to face those burglary matters that were under investigation.”

More great work from Counties Manukau Police:

"Four more get shown the door"

Four people attempting to evade Police have been taken into custody.

At around 1.30pm yesterday, Police were alerted to a stolen vehicle travelling along Clevedon Road.

Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Rakana Cook says the Police Eagle helicopter was able to quickly locate the vehicle and provide commentary to staff on the ground.

“The vehicle has continued travelling through Clevedon to Maraetai and into Whitford at excessive speeds while overtaking traffic through road works.

“Staff have successfully spiked the vehicle just prior to Whitford town centre and four occupants were taken into custody without incident.

“People who choose to drive dangerously are putting themselves and other members of the public at risk of serious injury or death,” Inspector Cook says.

“Drivers who are considering fleeing from Police really need to think about their actions and think hard before they put themselves, their friends and innocent people in jeopardy.

“Police will continue to take decisive action where we can so as to ensure the safety of other road users.”

A 19-year-old male will appear in Manukau District Court on 19 March charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Three others, aged 14, 13 and 11, have been referred to youth services.

Biker busted in Beachlands!

From NZ Police:

Police have stepped efforts up a gear in locating a pesky dirt bike rider in Beachlands.

As a result of enquiries and information from the public, the rider has found himself without a bike.

Senior Sergeant Anson Lin, of Counties Manukau East Police, says Beachlands residents reported the reckless behaviour throughout January.

“Residents were quite rightfully concerned,” he says.

“They reported incidents where the rider was allegedly riding on the wrong side of the road, speeding, and performing other dangerous manoeuvres.”

Beachlands Police began to make follow up enquiries into the reports.

“This sort of behaviour needlessly puts other road users in danger, as well as those engaging in the behaviour,” Senior Sergeant Lin says.

“Our staff took immediate action and following a number of enquiries, we identified a person of interest.”

A search warrant has since been carried out in Beachlands last week.

An 18 year-old male has been charged with dangerous driving and has had the dirt bike involved impounded, Senior Sergeant Lin says.

“We appreciate the cooperation of residents in reporting such incidents, as it plays a crucial role in ensuring a safer environment for everyone.

“Police will continue to take decisive action where we can so as to ensure the safety of other road users.”

Senior Sergeant Lin says Police will continue to monitor and respond promptly to concerns around road safety in the area.

Remember: if an incident is happening now and there is a risk, call 111.
