Hamish and Kyle from Newstalk ZB's The Nutter Club discuss 'Taming My Worry Monster, Wallace'
Thanks to Hamish Coleman-Ross, Kyle MacDonald from New Zealand Media & Entertainment Newstalk ZB The Nutters Club for talking about the issue of supporting good mental health in our children and pointing to constructive and fun resources that can help.
Kyle MacDonald says, one of the ways we can manage anxiety, particularly with kids, but can also apply to adults is externalizing it. We can create a way of being able to 'put it over there and observe what 'it' is. 'So I am not the anxiety; my anxiety is over here', and then I can think about it, examine it, and be mindful of it. With kids, you can use imagination and look at my worry monster and think about what I can do to manage my worry monster. Which is quite different from saying 'I am just really anxious' or I am an anxious person."
Hamish Coleman-Ross says, "Taming My Worry Monster, Wallace, is sort of like a Disney Pixar film, its aimed at kids but if you are an adult, you are definitely hard-pressed not to get something out of it. It is incredibility insightful."
Check back in next week to hear the wonderful Suzy Cato read the book aloud!
