"I think most of my work is part of the journey of the search, and I don't know where the answers come from. So whakapapa often does provide an answer when I come across it as to why I am interested in something."

"As Maori, especially in my day, you had to be a Tuna and sometimes you had to just keep your powder dry. Something would happen which would compromise your Māoriness, but you just go around it. If you bang it, you're not gonna get to your destination. Now's the time for banging it."
- Pio Terei

"Chisels make different marks depending on how hard you hit it. The harder you hit it, the angrier you are. The softer you hit it, the more in control you are, and the chisel or leave marks accordingly. And you can tell what's going on in their heads, in their minds. And it's simple. It's not hard. It's not science. It's got nothing to do with spirit. It's just got to do with the fact that chisels leave a reminder of where you've been."

Origins 2 Episode 2: 'The Polynesian Triangle' - Scotty travels to the corners of the Polynesian Triangle, to unravel any evidence of connection with the Indigenous of Rapa Nui and Hawai’i, who are said to share the same Polynesian ancestors. He learns how his tūpuna navigated the ocean, what they were faced with on arrival and how their surroundings shaped the tangata whenua. Despite the vast ocean that separates these distant islands, Scotty is astounded to learn that it is actually the ocean that connects them.

Origins 2 Episode 1: 'Voyage of The Kūmara' - Scotty Morrison explores the origins of the kūmara, which was brought to Aotearoa on waka by Māori across the Pacific Ocean. Valuable enough to bring across the world’s largest Ocean, Scotty visits the origins of kūmara in South America to uncover if his tūpuna made contact here. Scotty then heads to the Marquesas, where it is likely that the kūmara first entered the Pacific and he is met with startling revelations about his connections in a place completely unknown to him.

Kia Ora e te whānau! We are excited to share that Origins Season 2 is out next Monday 11 of September.

In this second season, Scotty explores some of the misinformation and misrepresentation of Polynesian and South American contact, such as Thor Heyerdahl’s theory of South Americans sailing into Polynesia through the “Kon Tiki” expedition, which still influences some people’s thinking today. We learn about traditional pacific navigation and by using science and Indigenous mātauranga, we carefully piece the puzzle together.
