It’s a big first this one!

As a drum company I had always wanted to have a metal snare option of some sort but didn’t know how it would fit into the brand. After much deliberation within myself and research I felt that Corten steel snare was a great way to start the KDRUMS Metal snare journey.

Introducing the Corten Acid Wash Series!
Corten is a very interesting steel packed with features.
Corten Steel (sometimes known as weathered steel) is a group of steel alloys that are often used in outdoor construction. Corten Steel was designed to eliminate the need for painting and if left outside, exposed to the elements, they will develop a rusted appearance in just a few months.
To speed up this process you can use a range of chemicals and in a week or so you get the finish of these pictured.
Sealed in a matte sealer to keep in the look and stop the process from continuing.
Basically I really wanted the first ones to hold that strong contrast with the shell and the clean crisp hardware, they turned out exactly how I’d hoped!
Finally getting some time to hit these things and sheeeesh they sound good!
Every snare looks different with how the process takes effect.
I’m beyond stoked with the overall product here.
Lucky enough to be first off the batt with their snares pictured here are Stan, Shaun and Dean. You lucky buggers I haven’t even got one yet!!!

With the next batch for public sale a couple more months away I have a very limited run in sizes in 14” and 13” in depths from 5”-7”.

There’s custom and then there’s “Dean” custom!

This is the second kit for Dean who has been as amazing supporter of the brand and threw me a curveball with making him Rick n Morty theme kit first and now a Lord Of The Rings kit just for good measure!!!

In all honesty this build was a testing one. There were many points throughout the build that I reconsidered every aspect. Dean was awesome letting me work thru the intricacy’s of this build and hugely patient in time it took to pull this one together.

But I am finally so excited to handover to Dean and introduce to you all ‘Radagast’. (Had to keep with the theme)
Sizes are:
22” x 14” Kick drum
14” x 7” Snare
10” x 7.5” Rack 1
12” x 8” Rack 2
16” x 14” Floor
😍
Radagast is a Rimu stave Shell with Pine re-rings. Rebated into the shell is a .6mm thick brass engraved with the LOTR script. The shells have a burnt finish from the centre outwards to set off the brass and black nickle hardware to pull it all together.

10 years ago, almost to the day was the first time you played one of my kits. It was for a show at Powerstation where you were crazy / happy enough to take a risk on this random guy making custom drum kits. This was on my first ever Rimu kit I built which was far from perfect, but actually still have to this day.
I remember after the show catching you very quickly as you were doing the fan meet n greet thing and you very simply said something similar to, “yeah man, loved it, let’s do it”. I wasn’t entirely sure if it was the post show refreshments talking but sure enough, true to your word, later that week we caught up to design your first kit. 🥁
This also was the time I started working with you drum teching and the hangs began.
Numerous tours all over the globe, A few smashed tour van windows 🤦🏼‍♂️ One chewed up passport and US Visa by my dogs🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ Countless nights out, Countless times getting you back to our accom! Countless times waking you up for lobby call!! Pub, Club, Arena and Stadium shows! Hours of s**t talking while you’re drumming onstage in our talk back mics! 🎙️Countless chats sitting in random airports/tour busses waiting for the next thing and of course 3 drum kits later it’s time for a change.
Your loyal support of me and this small NZ business over these 10 years has been amazing and I don’t think I can thank you enough for it.
I’m super excited for you with the new endeavors ahead and looking forward to the next drink together.
You’ll be very missed on the road.

If your not familiar with Matai timber. It’s almost a little bit of a super timber to me. Used widely for flooring due to its long straight tight grain it makes it not only great to work with being so true and naturally straight but also very hard and consistent in density. Really is a great timber to turn on the lathe. Plus you know anything they use for flooring that lasts is gunna be hard!

This guy has just as much character in sound as in looks. I definitely go thru stages of snare sounds and feels, every now and then you find one that just makes you play different and it sits with you a while….. this is one of those! The big old body with 2.3mm hoops let’s this Beauty sing!
