On Thursday a barrage of carbon bombshells landed on Resilience Day. The first was from Climate Action Tracker, the authoritative group of science organisations that lives up to its name. They publish a Global Update report that gives a short paragraph on how each country is doing to live up to its climate obligations (alongside other in depth analysis.) This years review of New Zealand echos many of the same criticisms of previous years, highlighting our reliance on overseas offsets and our methane exemptions for the agriculture, livestock and waste. Rod Oram breaks down how New Zealand is failing, and what needs to change if we are going to meet our obligations. "We must have zero tolerance for net-zero greenwashing. Using bogus ‘net-zero’ pledges to cover up massive fossil fuel expansion is reprehensible. It is rank deception. This toxic cover-up could push our world over the climate cliff." - New Zealand's Rod Carr, chair of the Climate Change Commission A new UN report lays out what companies, cities and provinces need to do to make genuine net zero claims. While there was a lot of good intention in this space, only a third of the largest listed companies have net zero commitments and half of those don't even have a plan to achieve them. Very few companies or local governments had pledges that met all of the requirements produced by the expert panel. Read the full story here: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/greenwashi...
