He became the head of the Catholic Church in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict.

Pope Francis was a passionate advocate for God's creation, and for migrants and refugees. During his time as Pope he worked tirelessly towards unity.

Pope Francis died on Monday, one day after addressing the crowd from the main balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on Easter Sunday.

At his last public appearance, Pope Francis repeated the message of peace. During the Easter blessing, the Pope’s words echoed the countless appeals he had made over the years, urging world leaders to lay down arms and turn to dialogue.
