887,493 people (17.8 percent) identify as Māori, as per the 2023 Census NZ.

Matariki⭐, the Māori New Year, was traditionally a time when food stores had been built up. This meant more free time to spend with whānau and the community.

People would celebrate Matariki by sharing kai, kōrero, a ceremony and putting on entertainment. It would be a time to look forward to the New Year ahead.

Two years ago, Matariki was made a public holiday for the first time. Kiwis of all ethnicities come together to learn about the Māori culture and take a break from the long harvest throughout the past year.
