AJ Batt’s ‘When God Raced in Paradise’ has picked up Written Article of the Year at the SNZ Awards in Palmerston North!

When God Raced in Paradise documented the legendary AJ Foyt’s visits to New Zealand, and was supported by an incredible range of images taken by the great Bill Meyer.

The article appeared in NZ Dirt Track Racing Magazine in June 2023, and was an instant hit.

A well deserving winner of an article that captured and shared sporting history with us all.

Congratulations Allan!

A MASSIVE congratulations to Daryl Shuttleworth for taking out the Speedway Commentary of the Year award at the SNZ awards in Palmy!

stoked and super surprised Speedway NZ Commentary Of The Year Winner.

Firstly thanks to Jason from The Pits Media for accepting this award on my behalf (and congrats on your own award). It seems when I decide to stay away from these events I win ....... I will stay away a bit more.

Thanks to my clubs Aotea Electric Riverside Speedway, Central Motor Speedway and Custom Signs Beachlands Speedway, I cant do what I do without you guys putting on a decent show.

Thanks Orlana, my wife for being so understanding when every weekend in summer is spent at the track, also the rest of my family who support me in my speedway.

Bennie Bishop from Speedway Australia, thanks so much for what you guys have done for me and my commentary, what you Chad, Nults, Bronnie, Dean and Rusty have taught me in your courses have come to fruition, I feel very indebted to you guys across the ditch.

Finally Corbyn and Stu, what a couple of champion finalists to be nominated alongside. Stu, you are a true legend my friend, and Corbyn, im a bloody proud Dad seeing your name there along side ours. We dont do what we do to reap rewards, we do it for the love of the sport, we dont need a trophy for that. Much respect lads.

Thanks to all my supporters and people in the sport of speedway, this award is for us all, this award means so bloody much! ....... 2x NZ Commentator Of The Year, I like the sound of that.

The 2023/24 NZ Saloon Car Championship brought the curtain down on my racing career which started in the streetstock class way back in 1987. Well at least that’s what I thought at the time.

Having finished on a high placing 5th at the NZ Champs on Monday I was informed by SNZ that two cars finishing ahead of me have failed the post championship inspection and have subsequently been disqualified from the championship. This moves us up to 3NZ and with that honor I feel it is appropriate that we put the 3NZ/21A on the track for selected meetings this season including the national title.

To do this there is some work to do but hopefully we can put it all together and be trackside representing Waikaraka Park Speedway and the saloon car class.

Congrats to Kevin Williams who is now our current 2NZ.

Will update our plans closer to the commencement of the season.

Our favourite friend and crew chief is doing it tough right now so time for a bit of good news!

I am super excited to announce I’ll be moving into the Skinny Colson - Fan Site/Ayrton Hodson 28M Sprintcar this season! With the move of Ayrton Hodson Racing to HLR for the upcoming season the opportunity was there to move up and I can’t wait to get to grips with the new car. After discussion with Skinny and with someone else already utilising the 28M I am super proud to announce that the famous 66 will return to Speedway.

When we visited Skinny this weekend he managed to stay on the current medical issues for all of 30 seconds before conversation moved to the upcoming season! As he said, I’ll be there no matter what even if Arlene needs to wheel me in!

Thank you to everyone who lent a hand throughout my first and second season in the 28M Six Shooter. For now our thoughts continue to be with Skinny and Arlene in this really difficult time. He loves visitors and if you can’t make it in person give him a message or call.

Announcement! We've teamed up with the NZ Dirt Track Racing Magazine for a series of articles entitled "The Speedway GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) - using our database of known results at all major national championships and looking at every major speedway class, we've ranked the top drivers in each class and derived a formula to determine the best overall!

We've had a great time putting this together and if you're interested in ranking drivers from yesteryear and a bit of number crunching I think you'll really enjoy the first article in the July magazine which they have just released, with the second to follow in September. Make sure you pick up a copy.

Thanks to the Dirt Track for publishing!

Flying the Flag for NZ

Well last night was a dream come true, I’ve raced against Keith Kunz Motorsports for a lot of years and to finally sit in one of their cars was a bucket list ticked ✅
We came oh so close to winning first time out, and had a blast working with Keith and the guys.
I can’t thank Keith, Pete and KKM for the opportunity, let’s hope we can do it again sometime!

WOW TO RETURN TO EASTERN STATES

The popular Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series will makes its return to eastern states Speedway Blenheim next February and local speedway club President Stu Coutts couldn't be happier.

"We have waited since November 2020 for an opportunity to host the Sprintcars again and the War of the Wings will put on a heck of a show. I'm rapt, and this will be a big show for us", said Coutts.

Last time the Sprintcars raced at Eastern States Steve Duff jnr set a new track record of 14.0364 during time trials, but Coutts is confident that the magical 13 second bracket will be entered.

"We were really unlucky with the weather last time with rain setting in early in the programme. The track, and the cars have improved since then. I will be very surprised if the track record isnt smashed. We will be the first night in a double header with Nelson hosting the Sprintcars the following night. The war of the Wings organisers have said that defending series champion Joel Myers jnr from the USA is returning to defend his series title, and there is also a strong chance that there will be another American and some North Island drivers appearing at our event."

Coutts said that Myers, who is also the current New Zealand champion and at just 18 years old he is a talent that will become a star.

"This kid is so talented. I am sure in a year or two we will proudly say that we saw Joel Myers race at Eastern States."

The meeting is sure to be a highlight of the season, so Coutts advises that people should mark February 14,2025 in their diary now.
