We end our first season with Rob Warner DJ: a man about town since the 90s who’s DJd at all the major venues and festivals, and he's just about to do the next LO-Fi Explorations mix. As underground promoters, we certainly know how difficult it is to make the case for what we do to the local authorities, so we thought it’d be good to speak to someone who actually knows how to do it. How can we change archaic licensing laws? How can underground promoters get funding? Why are strip clubs given longer licenses than DJ-led venues? etc. etc.

Rob became an obsessive record collector when he discovered the US sounds of Murk and Strictly Rhythm while in Japan. When he came back to Auckland, he would go religiously to Simon Grigg’s BPM Records and feast on the latest underground house from the US and Europe. This eventually led to him playing at one of the most legendary venues in Auckland, The Box, and being the NZ tour DJ for Global Underground. He’s been a constant on the scene ever since, fighting the good fight for underground music and club culture.

ANTIX are one of the biggest names in NZ electronic music. They're one of the few NZ acts to properly make it in Europe and America, and they're still going strong, with a new album coming out imminently. LO-FI worked with them to create a 25th anniversary tour that was sadly cut short by COVID, but not before they'd played an epic set at the Auckland Wintergarden at The Civic. We talk to them about that night and a whole host of other things, including:

-Do you have to leave NZ to make a proper living out music?
-The Cyberculture Records and Normanby Road parties in the late 90s
-How it felt to be selling out 30,000 shows in South America, but struggle to make a living when they came back to NZ
-Why they moved away from ANTIX and used pseudonyms, and why they've come back to ANTIX
-Were they ever psytrance?
-What the scene can do to protect itself in difficult economic times
-How ANTIX are breaking into NFTs

For episode 2 of the series we speak to all-round creative legend, Jamie Larnach. He’s been a great friend and confidant to LO-FI down the years, and by God, this man has some stories! From the moment his parents took him to Nambassa Festival, Jamie was destined to create and perform in NZ’s great outdoors… he’s been a fixture on the festival scene across five different decades. You won’t be surprised to hear him give very good insight on where our festival culture is today, and the deeper meaning of what we’re doing as performers and participants on the dancefloor.

Other topics covered:
-Why has there never been no festival in NZ as big as Nambassa?
-Are the younger generation taking on the mantle?
-Should events have a more democratic structure so the DJ is not centre stage?
-Jamie’s life travelling the world in a psychedelic micro circus
-The history of the ‘burner’ ethos
-The policing of conduct on dancefloors
-Indoor events V outdoor events
-The purpose of recorded DJ mixes

Who better to kick off Season 1 than Joost Langeveld? The man is a Godfather! Just look at his CV: Reliable Recordings, Subware, Nemesis Dub Systems, Strawpeople, Compulsory Allies, Greg Johnson, co-founder of Bigpop Studios, and just for good measure, he wrote the theme tune to Popstars.

These were the burning questions:
-Is it harder for musical artists to make a living now than in the past?
-What happened to Strawpeople?
-Why is now the right time to bring back Reliable Recordings?
-How did racial integration drive the scene in the late 80s?
-How are Joost and Bigpop empowering the next generation of artists?

**MISSION STATEMENT FROM OSEY**

LO-FI presents our next adventures in Aotearoa’s sonic underground, the podcast series, For The Record.

As a house and techno aficionado and secret nerd, I’ve always been interested in what makes the cogs whir behind closed doors. I’m a firm believer in using your voice (big or small) to make the change you want to see, and I’m also a big believer in the art of chatting absolute nonsense!

So when my old friend Mike Boorman came over to NZ from the sunny shores of Ibiza (he’s pretty good at this broadcast malarky... check out his past work: https://soundcloud.com/mike-boorman/sets/hot-air), this was a great excuse to learn how to podcast with him, which led to the delights of talking to some people that I know, respect and like a lot.

The aim of this podcast is to shine a light on some local talent (not that they need it), share some insights on the issues that music promoters/DJs/producers face behind the scenes, and also enjoy some banter with friends.

In our first For The Record series, I keep going back to the question: ‘what on earth happened to the Auckland DJ scene in the mid 2000s?’. It’s not that the DJ scene is bad today, but the scene I came back to after my time overseas was smaller than it was when I left. So it’s been great to speak to key people who were actually there and hear their insights + also how they view our current creative culture. I learnt a lot, so I’m sure you will too.

My name’s Owen and this is my version of a TED talk.

Enjoy the interviews!
