One of New Zealand's preeminent blues musicians, New Plymouth-born Keith Marsden got his break with the 1960s R&B band The Breakaways. After time performing in Australia, he returned home; by the 1980s he was touring Aotearoa often. During an early visit to the United States, he befriended legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Texan featured on one of the beloved 'Travellin' On' adverts with Marsden and Murray Grindlay. In the 1990s Marsden studied Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi and taught blues music at the Waikato Institute of Technology. Later he was made a member of the NZ Order of Merit.

For the last 20 years or so Midge Marsden has been performing (weather permitting !) at the Blockhouse Bay Beach Reserve as part of Auckland City's 'Music in Parks' programme. We are grateful and proud that our council has kept these free concerts going. Kevin was also a great mentor and motivator and brought many performers (young and not so) through the studio.

Here is an album of classic Red McKelvie songs that he recorded before passing over to the great gig beyond Kurow.
His love of New Zealand story-telling is obvious and while he recorded this in 2016 he gave up on taking the project any further because he felt his singing was no longer up to scratch - I didn't think it was a problem at all ! We made a CD out of it to give away at Red's memorial celebrations, but now, with Red's family's permission have uploaded it to Spotify, iTunes etc
