In my spare time I like to paint murals. My style is influenced by graffiti, sign writing, typography and textile design. Painting murals allows me to think and work outside the box, in 3D and physical spaces, and developing my own art style and experimenting with typography informs the design work I do as well.

I love to crochet! My mum introduced me to it nearly 2 years ago and I’ve pretty much had a project on the go ever since. I just needed something to do that didn’t involve looking at a screen and now I can’t stop thinking about what to make next, mostly through Youtube tutorials or patterns from makers found on Instagram. I switch between making something that takes a bit longer like cardigans with something that can still give me a quicker sense of gratification like hats or plant pot covers. I think growing up with social media and having so much information at our ready has really shortened my attention span, so crochet also allows me to practice patience and really slowing down. I don’t crochet with intention to sell as I don’t want that pressure but if my friends see something cool that’s crochet, I like to try and make it for them. My friend has asked me to make a crochet cat couch which I think will be my next project.

Crochet can be very methodical and gets me to think about how a decision made affects the outcome. Playing with colours, texture and construction in crochet also lets me flex my design muscles a bit more than I normally would which keeps me creative in my work. Indirectly, it allows me to switch off the outside world for a bit and come back to work with a fresher mindset.

We at Spruik are an inspired bunch! Each of the team have shared what personally makes them tick day-to-day - in their worlds outside of work. We encourage the team to own their uniqueness and would like to take the opportunity to celebrate everyone’s authentic selves. Here is what our Design Director, Stacey Morrissey has to say:

As a creative it’s my job to have an engaged and active mind, ready to answer a brief, push the status quo, come to a new solution - and then improve on it. Add three children to that mix with their individual need’s challenges and schedules to also occupy my thinking - and my brain can get quite full!

Although my family and working life keeps me very busy, I carry an innate need to create. I’ve found over the years, that I’m at my happiest when I do not suppress that need. No matter how busy life gets, the more I create, the more creative I am in my day-to-day thinking and work output - Everyone wins!

Finding the balance is the tricky part. Time is precious when you’re a working mum.

Luckily, children are full of enthusiasm to create, and mine will happily sit and draw or paint for hours. I take full advantage of that time and join in - combining quality family time with my space to create.

Granted at this time in my life I have limitations when it comes to making things. However, my children often present me with new creative challenges and delight me with their out of the box thinking. It’s great food for the imagination!

Like Albert Einstein said, ‘Creativity is contagious, pass it on’.
