It was impressive to see this sartorial trio fill the arena with just 3 instruments, creating their fusion vibe of lounge jazz funk with Asian, Mexican, Middle Eastern and African influences thrown in. Slow, minimal tunes were enhanced with atmospheric lighting, and the more upbeat got the disco balls ablaze. The ultimate crowd-pleaser was a mega medley of some of the most famous basslines in jazz, hip hop and pop - an instant dance party ensued. The jewel and driver of their sound is Laura 'Leezy' Ochoa, whose bass digs deep and funky, backed up by Donald 'DJ' Johnson on drums - the space in between his beats is profound. Mark Speer is virtuosic on guitar, exploring pentatonic scales and rockin' out to build their sound, obviously a scholar of many Eastern and Western cultures. Khruangbin have carefully curated their look and stage persona to enrich their music (Laura never wears the same outfit twice) and I love that this mainly instrumental band is capturing the attention of large audiences worldwide.

What's not to love about 8 jazz musicians going hell for leather from the opening track, giving the Khruangbin fans a euphoric warm-up. Been 3 years since Kamasi performed in Auckland at the Powerstation, he said he missed us, and we certainly missed him. Thanks to the postponement and reshuffle of the Khruangbin tour, Kamasi got put on the bill and given this opportunity to play to 5000+ at the arena.

He came with his usual awesome 8-piece band, which included his dad, Rickey 'Pops' Washington on flute, and Miles Mosley on bass. They didn't waste any time in their 70-minute set (supporting Khruangbin) playing crowd faves "Street Fighter Mas" and "Fist of Fury". Also a new one inspired by the birth of his daughter called "Sun-Kissed Child" and one of keyboardist Brandon Coleman's funky high life jams "Mutha Afrika". Miles' insane solos were a highlight.
