❓ Are young people less interested and engaged in politics and civil society?

On Our World, Connected podcast, host Christine Wilson challenges negative assumptions about youth participation and reveals a more hopeful picture, backed by British Council Next Generation research.

Joining Christine are two young changemakers:

Disty Winata: an Indonesian activist with experience at the G20, the UN, and the British Council’s 90 Youth Voices for The Future programme.

Dhari Al-Malih: a geological engineer from Iraq using science for social good.

Discover how young people are driving change and how we can amplify their voices in decisions that matter most.

Adjectives often have different levels, so we use modifiers to give more detail.

e.g.

📍It’s a bit cold so take a jacket. (a bit = not too cold)
📍My dog is pretty old now. (pretty = quite old)
📍Don’t buy that – it’s really expensive. (really = extremely expensive)

You can’t use certain modifiers with absolute adjectives because they have no levels. It’s all or nothing.

Use the modifiers ‘absolutely’, ‘totally’ or ‘completely’ instead.

e.g.

✅️ That’s totally impossible.
❌ That’s really impossible.

Likewise, you can’t say something is a small amount of an extreme adjective.

Use the modifiers ‘absolutely’ and ‘really’ instead.

✅️ I’m absolutely starving.
❌ I’m a bit starving.

Look at the postcard. Which of the modifiers in yellow are incorrect?

This is a great exercise for IELTS preparation – mastering modifiers will help you improve your accuracy and natural tone in both Writing and Speaking tasks.
