The School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, invites you to Digital Disruptions 2024, a film festival celebrating the innovative use of new media technologies and collaborative film practices.

With the widespread proliferation of smartphones, webcams, and digital devices, our everyday lives are being documented and represented in novel and intimate ways. For the first edition of this festival, filmmakers, artist collectives, students, and community facilitators working with smartphones and new digital devices are invited to submit their entries. Submissions spanning various categories, including documentaries, fiction, music videos, and experimental works crafted by a community or in close collaboration and solidarity with them, are welcomed.

Unveiling new visual Narratives 🌟

Today on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Hri Institute is proud to launch images and illustrations that defy and challenge stereotypes surrounding sexual violence and women's narratives in Southasia.

Kindly visit https://hrisouthasian.org/changing-visual-narratives/

Though progress has been made in the field of journalism to reframe the conversation surrounding sexual abuse, the visual landscape has not kept up with the changes. Come reimagine the story with us as we explore themes beyond the binary of strength and victimization through striking visuals and art. Witness a gallery of illustrations and photographs in the coming days that go beyond conventional portrayals.

The Challenging Visual Depiction of Women and Sexual Violence in Media in Southasia project is a collaborative effort between the Hri Institute and talented artists, filmmakers, and photographers from Nepal and India. Over the past year, these creatives have delved into the intricate layers of survivorship, uncovering themes of care, healing, community, agency, and autonomy.

We express gratitude to visionary artists who have contributed to this transformative initiative: Sheelasha Rajbhandari, Shaili Malla, Prakash Ranjit, Pallavi Payal, Sapana Sanjeevani, Sara Toinch, Laxmi Gurung, Mrigaja Bajracharya, Priyanka Maharjan, Samana Rai and Alina Chhantel.

This launch is not just a moment but a movement. We invite everyone to explore and use the illustrations and photographs in their reporting, fostering an organic growth of this image bank. Our mission is to continue collaborating with more artists, students, and photographers throughout the region, amplifying voices and dismantling stereotypes. All the artworks and images are available for free download, but we kindly ask for credit to the Hri Institute and the artists. For high-res copies and usage, please email [email protected].

Let's collectively shape a new visual language that reflects the intricate tapestry of women's experiences!
