Ján Hocek at SKJAZZ, Slovakia with a reiew of Garden - Pilgrim Google translted into English:

The Norwegian band Garden was founded in 2016 by saxophonist and composer Mathias Hagen; however, first in a larger cast, the trio will exist in its current form only from 2022. Hagen lived in Nepal for five years in his youth, and during this time he got to know jazz and improvisation while studying at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. After returning to Norway, he continued his studies at the Faculty of Performing Arts in Stavanger and a master's degree in musical performance and composition at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. In the trio Garden, his compositions are played with him by double bassist Henrik Sandstad Dalen and drummer Øystein Aarnes Vik (known for example from the Arne Torvik Trio). Hagen's compositions are saturated with the tones and rhythms of Middle Eastern music, the form and aesthetics, in addition to jazz, European classical music, e.g. baroque. The result is the music on Pilgrim's debut, from which I unfortunately hoped for more. Although the trio boasts an exciting sound with clear roots in European energy-jazz and folk music, most of the 11 tracks seem rather sparse, sometimes faint. Fortunately, they are not stretched unnecessarily, so they do not become boring. There are even four miniatures among them, which have an interesting background. So, for example West is based on a live recording of Hagen's first semester concert at the academy in Gothenburg, where baritone saxophonist Henrik Büller played with him. To Louis In Bluesian, the author notes: “Some things never die. Blues is one of them.” Shelter is based on field recordings of air raid sirens. And then there are larger compositions (however, most often between five and six minutes long), where the percussion of guest Arne Martin Nybo (who is otherwise a very promising guitarist) is also occasionally heard. The composition Aisha was written in composer Kristian Blak's living room during Hagen's stay in the Faroe Islands in 2018. The title refers to the house cat Aisha, who stole water from his glass at night. In Louis The Vagabond, a man tries to understand what was; it is a comic composition rooted in the past and focused on an uncertain future. The melody in Under Ground struck Hagen in the basement of the Gothenburg Academy. The album closes with Warsong, in my opinion the best track of the album. It is exciting, unpredictable, colorful.
