Takk! 💜 ARY

A new week and this time we start with a video for a change. We've picked this video shared and made for The Leica Camera Blog over 10 years ago. It's focused on the amazing photographer - Mary Ellen Mark.
Mary Ellen Mark was a renowned American documentary photographer known for her striking and empathetic images that captured the raw and unvarnished aspects of human life. Born in 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mark's career spanned over five decades, during which she produced an impressive body of work that focused on the lives of marginalized and often overlooked individuals. Her photographs often evoked subjects like street children, prostitutes, mental patients, and people living on the fringes of society, revealing the vulnerability and resilience of the human spirit. Mark's ability to establish a deep connection with her subjects allowed her to capture their genuine emotions and stories, making her work a powerful example to the human condition.
One of Mary Ellen Mark's most notable projects was her long-term documentation of the lives of young people in the American foster care system, which culminated in her acclaimed book and film, "Ward 81." Her work was characterized by its evocative storytelling, often confronting the viewer with the harsh realities of life while simultaneously conveying a sense of empathy and understanding. Mary Ellen Mark's photography has left a legacy in the world of documentary photography, influencing countless photographers and challenging viewers to confront the often uncomfortable truths of our society through the lens of her camera.
Leica cameras, often referred to as "Leicas," are iconic in the world of photography, renowned for their precision engineering, exceptional craftsmanship, and the remarkable quality of images they produce. Founded in 1914 in Germany, Leica Camera AG has a storied history of pioneering the development of 35mm film cameras, introducing the world to the concept of compact, portable photography
Connected.ART visited last Sunday Alice Neel exhibition at Munch's Museum so it's a bit inevitable not to write about it. In order to make our followers also eager to know more about the artist we share this documentary suggestion.
"Alice Neel: Capturing the Inner Landscape"
In the documentary film "Alice Neel," directed by Andrew Neel and produced by Ethan Palmer, viewers are invited to embark on a compelling journey through the life and artistry of one of the 20th century's greatest portrait painters. Alice Neel, a trailblazing artist, redefined the genre of portraiture by masterfully delving into the inner landscapes of her diverse subjects. Her canvas welcomed a wide spectrum of humanity, from iconic figures like Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg to local neighbors in the vibrant streets of Spanish Harlem.
What sets Alice Neel's work apart is her ability to express the profound complexities and vulnerabilities of her sitters, offering an intimate glimpse into their souls. Her portraits are not merely representations but windows into the depths of human emotion and experience. From Communist Party leaders to art world luminaries, Neel's brush strokes immortalized the faces of New York and America in the 20th century, creating a social document that transcends time.
"Alice Neel" is not just a tribute to her remarkable talent but also an exploration of the challenges she confronted as a woman artist, a single mother, and a fearless painter who defied societal conventions. Through the lens of Andrew Neel and the editing finesse of Luke Meyer, the documentary vividly brings to life the story of a remarkable artist whose legacy continues to resonate in the art world and beyond. "The Simone Rocha x H&M presentation was straight out of a fairy tale"
Time goes by quite quickly. This Wednesday we focus again on augmented reality and fashion. Can you believe that this collaboration between the giant Swedish fast fashion brand H&M and the dreamy designer Simone Rocha came out over two years ago? Actually, it's not in time passing that we want to focus but rather on augmented reality and this great marketing concept - "H&M x Simone Rocha's Augmented Reality Fashion Spectacle"
In March 2021, H&M and renowned designer Simone Rocha teamed up to launch a groundbreaking fashion collaboration. Their approach was nothing short of imaginative and pioneering, setting a new standard in the fashion industry. The collaboration introduced an innovative blend of art, fashion, and technology, harnessing the power of augmented reality (AR). This unique approach aimed to bring art, fashion, and iconic figures right into the homes of invited guests worldwide, marking a remarkable first in the world of fashion.
To realize this futuristic 4D fashion experience, H&M x Simone Rocha leveraged the creative talents of painter Faye Wei Wei, combined with stunning volumetric video and 8th Wall webAR technology. The collaboration featured a mixed reality pop-up show, where recipients of specially crafted pop-up books received a truly immersive experience. By scanning QR codes within these books, volumetric performances sprang to life in augmented reality, showcasing the collection's garments in exquisite detail with lifelike movement. Notably, these performances included appearances by notable figures such as Helena Bonham-Carter and Kaia Gerber.
This collaboration was a dream come true for Faye Wei Wei, who also starred in the campaign. The artist expressed her excitement at merging her artistic universe with Simone Rocha's creative vision. Their work explored the interplay between femininity and power, a theme deeply embedded in both their respective bodies of work.

For the past few Tuesdays, we've been sharing and focusing more on augmented reality and virtual reality. Today will be no exception but instead of sharing again a musical artist we bring the artist - Marina Abramović.
Marina Abramović's life is a remarkable journey that has not only reshaped the landscape of contemporary art but also challenged the very definition of what it means to be an artist. Born on November 30, 1946, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), Abramović's early life and experiences would ultimately shape her career and artistic philosophy in profound ways.
Throughout her storied career, Abramović has been a trailblazer in the realm of performance art. Her work is characterized by a fearless willingness to push the boundaries of physical and emotional endurance. Early on, she realized the power of art as a medium for transcending the limits of the body and the mind. This realization led her to experiment with a wide range of artistic practices, from painful and physically demanding performances to works that explore the profound and often uncomfortable connections between herself and her audience.
This performance is called The Life. "The Life concept was altogether different: Can presence be conveyed even when the artist is elsewhere? The implications were both universal and eternal.
After unburdening themselves from all connected devices (phones, watches, etc.), participants in The Life do a pair of MR goggles and are escorted to viewing positions by attendants in lab coats. In front of the backdrop of the gallery’s actual walls, and the other visitors, a film-real Abramović — hair pulled back tightly and wearing a crimson dress — performs within a roped-off five-metre circle.
The event is choreographed to the specific capabilities of the technology — and feels absolutely real. This is the entirety of the artist, presented as if in the room with the audience. Talking to Christie’s in the short film above, Abramović explains
Last Friday we had a suggestion for the upcoming weekend and of course, it was art-related. Today we remain on the same topic, an art documentary but for now only accessible for the lucky ones living in Oslo.
"Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition invites the public to an intimate encounter with the genius Vermeer, giving us a unique opportunity to discover his fascinating artistry and enigmatic life. Here we will learn about Vermeer's history as it is known, and at the same time get an insight into the artist's creative processes, artistic choices, and motivation behind his paintings. We will get to know the very essence of Vermeer's art, namely how this master storyteller managed to transform simple and everyday life into something truly mysterious and exciting.
The film allows us to enjoy quiet close-ups of 28 of his 35 surviving works, such as "Girl with a Pearl Earring", "The Geographer", "The Milk Maid", "The Little Street", "Lady with a Maid Writing a Letter" and "Woman Holding a Scale ». We also get a very first encounter with the recently restored painting "Girl Reading a Letter at an open window".
Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition is based on Vermeer's now largest exhibition, which opened its doors in spring 2023 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. With loans from all over the world, the exhibition was to be open for just four months. Not surprisingly, it sold out within days of its opening. The film is therefore the only chance to get an insight into this historic event on the big screen. It is the director of the Rijksmuseum, the exhibition's curators, critics, and art historians who take us on this private and very interesting and lively tour. There will be a short introduction before the film by The Art Trotter.

How cool is David Bowie? Another Tuesday and we bring again the topic of Augmented Reality and music but today with one of most eccentric, playful, cool, and ahead of his time, the artist - Davie Bowie.
"On the 72nd anniversary of David Bowie’s birth, the David Bowie application launches on iOS and Android platforms. It includes over 400 high-resolution captures of David Bowie’s costumes, sketches, handwritten lyrics, notes, music videos, and original works of art are presented in striking arrangements and immersive settings, as well as dozens of never before seen items, including archival videos, drawings, photographs, and notes."
The app "David Bowie Is" is based on the exhibition (that had the same name), which ran from March 23 to August 11, 2013, was a comprehensive retrospective of David Bowie's life, music, and artistic contributions. It featured a wide range of artifacts, including costumes, handwritten lyrics, album artwork, and more. The exhibition aimed to provide insights into Bowie's creative process and the evolution of his music and persona over the years.
The launch of the app on the anniversary of David Bowie's birth is indeed a fitting way to celebrate his contributions to music and art. It's great to see how technology is being used to preserve and showcase the work of iconic artists like David Bowie, allowing fans to delve deeper into their creative processes and appreciate their impact on popular culture.
As the Guardian described - "The rather ambitious plan is not just to recreate the experience of going to the exhibition – which focused on the colourful, theatrical side of Bowie and drew a staggering 2m visitors – but to better it."

Today we have a suggestion for the upcoming weekend and of course, it's art-related.
"Young Picasso" is a documentary film released in 2019 that focuses on the early years of the legendary artist Pablo Picasso. Directed by Phil Grabsky, the film aims to shed light on the formative years of Picasso's life and artistic development, leading up to his eventual status as one of the most influential and prolific artists in history.
The documentary delves into Picasso's upbringing, childhood, and the early influences that shaped his artistic style and perspective. It explores the artist's early life in Spain, including his family background, education, and exposure to various art forms. The film also emphasizes the significance of Picasso's relationship with his father, who was an art teacher and played a pivotal role in nurturing his talent.
One of the notable aspects of the documentary is its collaboration with the three Picasso Museums located in Malaga, Barcelona, and Paris. This partnership allows for access to a wealth of archival material and artworks, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of Picasso's early life and artistic trajectory.
Overall, "Young Picasso" aims to highlight the lesser-known period of Picasso's life, demonstrating how his formative years laid the foundation for his later artistic accomplishments. By focusing on his upbringing, education, and early creative endeavors, the documentary provides a fresh perspective on the artist's journey to greatness.
While the documentary acknowledges that many films have explored Picasso's later years, "Young Picasso" seeks to fill a gap by concentrating on the earlier part of his life that contributed to the artist's emergence as an icon in the world of art. Through its engaging narrative and access to valuable resources, the film offers viewers a chance to appreciate the origins of Picasso's extraordinary artistic achievements.
You can find it on Amazon Prime.

Event of the week - Stockholm
At Arm’s Length - Hundred Years of Nordic Art" a group exhibition featuring artworks from the Tangen collection, curated by the Norwegian AKO Kunststiftelse. The collection encompasses art and crafts from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, focusing on painting, sculpture, drawing, graphics, and photography spanning from the 1900s to the present day.
The exhibition derives its title, "At Arm's Length," from a military expression symbolizing the distance between soldiers in a squad. In the context of the arts, it now refers to cultural politics, suggesting that politicians should maintain a reasonable distance and refrain from intervening in artistic content.
The exhibition aims to reveal the shared mindset among Nordic artists despite aesthetic differences. It explores how they worked, were influenced, and interacted in European cities, not their home countries. The extensive collection emphasizes these aspects, allowing for a selection of around 150 artworks by 40 artists to be displayed at Artipelag. The entire collection, containing 5000 works, will eventually reside in Kristiansand's Sørlandets Kunstmuseum, set to move in 2024. This Artipelag exhibition offers a unique preview before the collection's permanent home in Kristiansand.
Take time to watch the video and make sure if you are in Stockholm you have the chane to visit it!

Last Tuesday we shared a collaboration between Sigur Rós and Magic Leap for the "Tónandi" AR experience. Today we remain on the same topic of AR and music but this time featuring Gorillaz.
For the ones not aware, Gorillaz is known for its virtual band members and distinctive visual style, making them a natural fit for experimenting with AR technology to enhance their music and engagement with fans.
Gorillaz launched an AR app called "Gorillaz - Lenz" in collaboration with their fan club. The app allowed users to point their smartphones at specially designed triggers, such as artwork, merchandise, and even the moon, to unlock immersive augmented reality experiences. These experiences included interactive animations, games, and visual elements related to the band's universe. The app essentially brought Gorillaz's virtual characters and world into the real world of their fans, allowing them to experience the band's music and art in a new and interactive way. Users could explore the AR content from different angles and even take pictures and videos to share on social media.
This was back in 2017 and the app is not available anymore. Right now you have the chance to download a second app featuring Gorillaz. You will be able to find it at the usual places Google Play or App Store. Gorillaz performed their track ‘Skinny Ape’ in New York and London. This immersive performance is a unique chance to experience the band as never before, ‘larger-than-life’ and invading the iconic Times Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Have you ever heard about Marshmallow Laser Feast? "This London-based art collective has emerged as one of the leading virtual reality creators in the recent years. The company employs its signature pointillist aesthetic in real-time VR experiences, and explores perspectives that are inaccessible to the human senses." Isn't this cool? It's the second time this week that Connected.ART shares and writes about the same topic but that is also what we do, bringing art and technology together and blending in both worlds.
The video shared here is just a small example of what they do. "In the Eyes of the Animal" (2015): This project used VR to offer an animal's perspective of a forest. Participants wore VR headsets that displayed the forest from the viewpoints of various creatures, like a dragonfly or a frog. It aimed to raise awareness about the diverse ways animals experience the environment.
This is the story behind the video - "So, In the Eyes of the Animal is a virtual reality project. Well, it’s actually a mixed reality project because there are other elements than the virtual reality head-sets. It is a project that puts you in the eyes of four different animals and insects in Grizedale Forest. The idea of making a project came to us as an offer in 2015 from Forestry Commission and The Abandon Normal Devices Festival (AND). AND asked us to do a project for their 2015 festival that happens in Grizedale Forest which has a sculpture park.
We went to the site visit and came up with the idea of doing a virtual reality project that focuses on the perception of other inhabitants of the same forest and maybe visitors can see the forest not just from their own point of view but also from the point of view of different animals and insects that lives there. So we start working with this idea and talked to Salford University and Natural History Museum in London to provide us with a bit more insight in how those species perceiving their world, their surroundings. And then we s
This Tuesday we are excited to share this collaboration between Sigur Rós and Magic Leap for the "Tónandi" AR experience.
Sigur Rós, the acclaimed Icelandic band known for their ethereal and atmospheric music, joined forces with Magic Leap to craft an extraordinary artistic venture known as "Tónandi." This collaborative project brings together the band's enchanting melodies and Magic Leap's cutting-edge Augmented Reality technology to create an immersive audio-visual experience that goes beyond traditional boundaries.
At the heart of "Tónandi" lies an innovative concept that invites users to step into a realm where sound and visuals intertwine in captivating harmony. This AR experience transports participants into a world where music takes on a new dimension – a world shaped not only by the hauntingly beautiful tunes of Sigur Rós but also by the individual's interactions. Through the power of AR technology, users find themselves not just passive listeners, but active co-creators, with the ability to influence and shape the unfolding music.
Imagine the magic of watching virtual landscapes bloom and evolve as the music responds to your gestures and movements. Digital sculptures that mirror the contours of the music take form before your eyes, and harmonies are born anew with each interaction. With "Tónandi," Sigur Rós and Magic Leap have reimagined the relationship between sound and visuals, offering audiences an opportunity to engage with music on an entirely different level. It's an experience that transcends the conventional, inviting users to explore the intersection of music, technology, and the imagination.
