So, what does “Aernath” mean and where does the name come from?
“Aernath” is my moniker; my good old nickname in internets for years and also the name of my main characters in World of Warcraft. It’s a name I made up years ago combining: “Aer” (air) and “Natu” (-to come from) in Latin, -h at the end for fantasy emphasis :b
In summary, the word can vaguely be translated to: “The one who comes from the skies”; referring to the Blue Sky (Kök Tengri, the Root/Sky God) in the Turkic Mythology, considering how I’m a big fan of flight in WoW and how the Demon Hunters can spread their tattered wings and glide, it became very fitting in the game too, especially lately ;b
And that’s why “Aernath” in World of Warcraft is also the name of my main character, but he wasn’t always the Demon Hunter he is now, he’s been through a lot of trouble and made himself quite a story of his own. Without further ado, here's that...
“The Story of Aernath"
Of what he was and how he came to be the character he is today:
Aernath was born at Silvermoon to an average family, right around his early years as a High-Elf teenager he faced a great tragedy. With his luck and being able to stay out of the way of Arthas, he managed to become a survivor of Scourge invasion. Then trained himself to avenge his lost loved ones by the strongest weapon against the Scourge of Arthas: The Light. With the power drained of the captured Naaru, he both sated his thirst of magical energy and empowered his lust for revenge. Thus, he became a Retribution of the Light's vengeance, a deadly Blood Knight. After his training in his homelands completed, he moved out into service, right to the wasted planet that was Draenor once, now Outland. For the Horde, he has put his life in danger in various turning points. In the end, he stood against his once iconic idol and traitorous old leader Kael'thas. Defeating him and helped freeing his people from the clutches of Fel Magic he cursed them all with. Later he faced the ruler of the Outland, Illidan Stormrage at top of his stronghold he invaded, once the Temple of Karabor, now Black Temple and managed to defeat him too. After facing with the attempted return of Kael’thas, he fought his once sworn enemies Draenei side by side to push Kael’s Demonic allies and prevented Kil’jaeden to enter Azeroth right at the Sunwell itself. Thankfully, after cleansing and reignition of the Sunwell, he was free of the magical thirst once again. But of course, he could not enjoy that freedom but had to use that as a weapon. Because Arthas was risen back from his Frozen Throne to attack Azeroth once again. Time for revenge has arrived, so without thinking twice he joined the Horde forces lead by this now, hot headed Orc leader, Garrosh Hellscream, son of Grom Hellscream he heard the tales of and respected a lot. Under his command Aernath served in the war against the Lich King, he moved up in the ranks and joined the Argent Tournament to become a deadly Crusader of Light to ultimately get his revenge and in the end, he succeeded at being at the frontlines that invaded Arthas’s Saronite castle Icecrown Citadel, after a long fight, despite everything he could do, he was slain by Arthas... Only to be brought back by the spirit of Terenas to end him once and for all, and thus the revenge of his fallen loved ones and comrades was taken. But that death has taken its toll on him and he started to question the fabric of his being and what more he can do, hence that moment it became the end of his Paladin destiny. After the end of the war, Aernath returned to his motherlands, now serene and peaceful Silvermoon. Since the attunement of Blood Elves were always about magical energies, he followed his new calling and inevitably began studying the Arcane Arts, with some time spent on training and learning, in the end he managed to became a powerful Mage of Quel'thalas. But the peace was not everlasting, now the whole planet was shaking with tremors and in the end, the big Cataclysm has happened when the Dark Aspect, once noble Black Dragon Neltharion, now the fearful World Ender Deathwing, maddened and empowered by the Old God N’zoth, he had risen back from the heart of the Elemental Plane of Earth. The whole surface endured big changes, everything has changed. Deathwing kept raining fire and destruction on the poor denizens of Azeroth and the threat he brought was not just that, the Elemental plane of Fire and their leader Ragnaros threatened to burn everything, also the Elemental plane of Air and their leader Al’akir was on Deathwing’s side. Like those were not enough, the Old God’s forces and Twilight’s Hammer was on his side trying to bring the Hour of Twilight and free all Old Gods to bring back the Black Empire! Against all these, he fought one by one, helped Thrall in his effort to save the world and in the end used his new powers and abilities against the World Ender’s distorted self, and finally with the great help and sacrifice of the other Dragonflights and their aspects, he succeeded in being in the spearhead group of elite fighters who saved Azeroth. Right when that was over, a news about the discovery of a huge previously unknown continent beyond the mists was veiled, Pandaria was up for the taking and Warchief Garrosh, following his rise, he became his favourite leader so far and when he was ordering to attack, he followed the call and joined the fight, but during the struggle he got cross with fellow Horde members when they stood against their leader. Instead of trying to save him from the corruption of the Old God Y’Shaarj, in horror he has seen that the treasonous rebels joined forces with the enemy; Alliance! And helped them to invade their beloved Orgrimmar. Involuntarily he had to join this fight too, at least to prevent the needless friendly killings. At the end, he helped saving Garrosh from the corruption by destroying the Heart of Y’Shaarj, the only remnant of the once most powerful Old God, which was alone enough to create the Sha and corrupt the whole hidden continent for ages. Despite his efforts and protests Garrosh brought to trial. As he had guessed, even the August Celestials saw this and at the end of his trial, Garrosh’s life has been forgiven. But sadly, he couldn’t stop treacherous Wrathion and his new ally Bronze Dragon Kairozdormu to kidnap Garrosh and ignite the events that followed by. This was the final straw for him as a Mage for Aernath. In sadness and despair, he decided to return to Silvermoon again, dropped his Arcane studies and he chose seclusion in the forests of Silvermoon. Broken his trust in the acts and false decisions of his fellow people, in time he got closer with nature and beasts. He survived with hunting and blending in with the wilds. After his success at his new mastery was discovered, by the other experienced Blood Elf Rangers, he got invited for training and after some hesitation he accepted. With the help of Farstriders, he combined using his Arcane skills with bows and arrows and eventually became a powerful hawk-eyed Marksman. Meanwhile, the unexpected has happened and the Dark Portal turned to red and countless uncorrupted Orcs begun invading Azeroth. Turned out, they were led by “another” Grom Hellscream from another alternate reality’s past. The kidnapped Garrosh freed himself and saved this alternate version of his long past father from drinking the Demon Blood at all. And after being freed from becoming slaves to the Burning Legion they had been empowered by the siege technology and the Dark Portal knowledge Garrosh has brought. With that, the Iron Horde set his eyes on the traitorous enemies of Garrosh to take revenge. A cause Aernath would surely understand, but since Garrosh’s cleansing from the Old God’s corruption, there was a new Warchief at the throne, none other than the leader of the rebels; Vol'jin. With disgust but without nowhere to go, he accepted this decision and made peace with the situation, because times were dire and they had to stand together to survive, Iron Horde was attacking everything and everyone in sight and he had to join the fight again, this time combining his Arcane skills with his new but keen Marksmanship. Moving into alternate Draenor on the tail of Khadgar and Thrall, he quickly took things into his own hands. Now as a very experienced war veteran, he was needed at the lead in the assault. He was expecting to finally redeem Garrosh of his false fate but Thrall did the unexpected and cheated in a Mak’gora infront of Aernath’s own eyes. He never accepted his once respected leader Thrall's move in the Alternate of Nagrand where Thrall first met Garrosh on the Outland version of the place. Mourning the injustice against his Old Warchief there and having his disagreements with the new Warchief Vol’jin, still, even Vol'jin had to accept Aernath’s leadership skills after his efforts and the success against the Iron Horde. So, to lead that fight further right there, he was made a Commander of the Horde. Later he expanded his Garrison, even built a Navy to keep the fight there, his success brought the Iron Horde down and, in the end, paved the way to find the cause, the once treasonous Gul’dan’s Alternate version was same in motivation and with working with the Burning Legion, he managed to overthrow Grom, made the other leaders drink the Demon Blood and turned them into the pawns of the Legion to be put into front lines. Aernath attacked this at its creation in Hellfire Citadel, but despite managing to defeat the Legion forces in the making and even killing Archimonde, he saw that this was not the end, but just another beginning of a big trouble. He returned to his homeworld, but his mind was not at ease...
Then, as expected, everything changed when the Legion attacked... This new Gul'dan and his masters in Legion turned their eyes on Azeroth again. Defeating them in the heart of Draenor was just a setback and when the real invasions started, turned out being a Marksman was not enough for Aernath to fight back against this either. Things got seriously dangerous very fast and he recalled his fellow brethren whom he saw as traitors who stood by Illidan and being trained to be Demon Hunters. He now understood why they did that, because to stand against the Legion he had to move front, become even more powerful, but that needed a serious sacrifice...
Aernath already had several troubles of living with the decisions of his people and allies, so accepting the unavoidable fate of being shunned by his people came as a quite easy price to him. He did the unthinkable, using a forbidden time ritual with his past Arcane knowledge, he went back in time to join the Illidari Blood Elves of the Black Temple. He went through the rituals of the followers of the Betrayer he once fought against, he renounced Arcane for good, took the oath of loyalty to Illidari and completely accepted their ways. Finally, at the end, to finish the transition, he carved out his eyes to replace them with spectral sight, dropped behind his legendary bow to hold deadly warglaives with sharp blades in the front lines against the Legion to become one of their most feared enemies... ..And after countless Demons killed, their power and souls inhaled, he truly earned his well-deserved title:
Slayer!
..A perfect definition of a vicious and merciless Demon Hunter! (...To be continued)
