It has specialised in bebop, though it also did a subseries of important releases of Dixieland and swing recordings. As of 2000 the label had issued some 600 albums, and had two sublabels, World Wide Jazz and Limetree Records. The label also sponsored

the Timeless All Stars, which was a six-piece ensemble founded by Wigt in 1981. The initial membership of the group was Harold Land, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Buster Williams, and Billy Higgins. Notable releases include Dizzy Gillespie Meets Phil Woods Quintet, McCoy Tyner's Bon Voyage, Lou Donaldson's Forgotten Man and albums by the George Adams-Don Pullen Quartet and many more.

In 1983, the jazz legends Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette made their one and only recording as a trio at Vanguard Studios, NYC. The record would be called The All American Trio, which would eventually released in 1986 on Limetree Records (a sister label of Timeless Records).

Cedar Walton was one of the most influential hard bop pianists and became well known as the pianist with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He would become particularly renowned for his association with the jazz collectives Eastern Rebellion and The Timeless All Stars. The multiple Grammy Award winning bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette both gained fame early in their careers for their associations with two different Miles Davis groups. They would appear separately on numerous Timeless recordings, however together again with Cedar Walton on the album 'This Is For You, John' alongside Benny Golson and Pharaoh Sanders.

We're pleased to announce the reissue of 'Cedar Walton / Ron Carter / Jack DeJohnette' on 180 grams audiophile vinyl, which will worldwide available in stores on September 6th, 2024. The album features the songs 'Iron Clad', 'Blue Heart', 'All The Things You Are' a.o. It contains newly written liner-notes by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow.

In the summer of 1980, the jazz world bore witness to an electrifying fusion of talent, rhythm, and soul as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers took the stages of two iconic European festivals: Montreux Jazz Festival and NN North Sea Jazz Festival.

The Big Band performers, next to Art Blakey on drums, consisted of a stellar line-up with Bill Pierce, Bobby Watson, Valery Ponomarev, James Williams, Charles Fambrough, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Robin Eubanks, Kevin Eubanks and John Ramsey. For the Marsalis brothers, Wynton and Branford, and also Eubanks brothers Robin and Kevin these were their first ever recordings of them together.

Celebrating 115 years of Benny Goodman, The King of Swing!

The American clarinetist and bandleader led one of the most popular swing big bands in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938, was described as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music.

Benny Goodman is considered as one of the founding fathers of the swing era, the most popular music style in the 30s and 40s. Over the course of his long decorated career he would associate himself with likes of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Mildred Bailey, Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa, George Benson and many, many more.

In the Timeless Historical series (or Chris Barber Collection), Goodman is represented on 'The Young Benny Goodman 1928-1931', 'Ted Lewis & His Band 1929-1934', 'Benny Goodman 1931-1935', 'The Compositions of Jelly Roll Morton 1923-1941', Eddie Condon 1928-1931' and 'Ethel Waters 1929-1939'. These remasted compilations are available on all streaming and downloading platforms.

Happy birthday Archie Shepp! The American tenorsaxophonist, educator, playwright and ofcourse Timeless icon is turning 87 years today.

Archie Shepp made a name for himself in the 1960s as a radical sidekick to giants such as Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane. He recorded his outspoken opinions about social injustice and gave them musical form in furious and virtuoso solos. His African-American heritage plays an important role in his sound and philosophy. In the 1970s, more soul, funk and gospel crept into Shepp's free jazz, before also picking up bebop, ballads and blues in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Shepp's universe is populated by themes and styles ranging from Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Horace Silver to Charlie Parker, Albert Ayler and Thelonious Monk.

Archie recorded 4 albums on Timeless Records: 'Lover Man' (1989), 'I Didn't Know About You' (1991), 'Black Ballads' (1992) and 'Something To Live For' (1997). Black Ballads and and I Didn't Know About You have recently been reissued on 180 gram coloured vinyl.

The Timeless Historical collection (or Chris Barber Collection) includes two remastered compilations with ‘Bing Crosby’ and ‘Jazz Goes To The Movies’. Also appearing on these recordings are Paul Whiteman, Duke Ellington, The Dorsey Brothers, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland and many more legends from that time..

Yesterday we honoured our late tourmanager, producer, booking agent and concert programmer Peter Huijts during Scott Hamilton’s concert in his hometown Enschede (NL). Peter was a great loyal friend, a trustworthy support for countless touring jazz giants and producer for many Timeless recordings.

In the words of his daughter Ellemieke Huijts: “Last night there was a concert in tribute to our father. Incredibly nice that our father is not forgotten and remembered in this way. A beautiful LP (Live At De Tor by Scott Hamilton) has been released in memory of Peter Huijts. Thank you dear Ria and Wim Wigt from Timeless Records for doing this! Dear Dad (and Mom) we miss you..”

Scott Hamilton is still appearing in Utrecht TivoliVredenburg, Amsterdam Bimhuis and Zierikzee Theaters aan Zee this week.

Today, 100 years ago, American jazz double bassist, pianist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus was born. He is often regarded as one of the greatest jazz composer of the 20th century.

Timeless Records founder and jazz agent Wim Wigt did many concerts and tours with Mingus between 1972 till 1978. After his death in 1979 his bandmembers formed a jazz ensemble called Mingus Dynasty.

To celebrate his birthday Timeless Records recently released unreleased work from Mingus Dynasty, recorded in 1985, called Fables of Faubus. The song Fables of Faubus is a composition written by Mingus himself and is one of his most political explicit works, highlighting the racial issues in 1960s. This recording features artists such as Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, Ralph Moore and Jack Walrath. Fables of Faubus is exclusively available on all digital stores.

Another vinyl reissue by the jazz giant Pharoah Sanders as part of the Timeless Records 45th Anniversary Jazz Series brought by Music On Vinyl.

His 1990 album 'Moon Child' bookended a decade of musical soul searching for him. The acclaimed free jazz saxophonist is known to have a raw and abrasive sound, but reinvented himself on this album as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful deliberations. Moon Child is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on its title track.

** PHAROAH SANDERS - AFRICA **

As a celebration of Timeless Records’ legacy, Music On Vinyl presents the Timeless Records 45th Anniversary Jazz Series. This series features several classics from the Dutch jazz label being re-issued throughout 2021-2022 and kicks off with Pharoah Sanders’ Africa on November 12th, 2021.

Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz, which has earned him royal status amongst free jazz players, critics and collectors. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, his sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is possible for a saxophonist to produce. His 1987 album Africa is soulful but also searching for a strong groove at the same time. The album was an explicit tribute to his late mentor John Coltrane, another giant of jazz.
