We couldn’t be more happy with these words! ✨

For the second time, MUMSTER has been entrusted with the PR responsibilities for the Biennale 2024. The challenge was to generate awareness for the exhibition not only in its home base of Arnhem, the Netherlands, but also across the three sister sites in Nairobi, Kenya; Bengaluru, India; and SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil. And transmit its layered message across (mainstream) media outlets like , , and .deverdieping.

We developed, produced, and launched the entire PR campaign for State of Fashion. This included a well-attended press opening, valuable media partnerships, organizing the event, impactful influencer collaborations, creating the campaign video and aftermovie, and executing the social media strategy plan. All elements were carefully aligned with the message of the State of Fashion Biennale: Ties that Bind.

In celebration of Amsterdam pride weekend, we are highlighting 2 designers from the LGBTQ community and . 🌈

Bas Kosters is a Dutch fashion designer known for his creativity and use of bright colors and patterns. He has a playful and wild aesthetic. Bas has showcased his amazing work in many exhibitions. He is mostly known for his 2016 exhibition “I Want It to Be Soft.” He also participated in Biennale of 2024 under “We Are All Mothers.”

Bas also gives back to the community through several projects, such as his collaboration with .eu Unite, creating the Robot Bag, which was made by newcomers to Europe.

Jordy Arthur Vaesen is a Belgian fashion designer with a large following on social media. He engages his audience by creating his own garments with a smile and positive attitude. Jordy has caught the eye of big brands and celebrities.

Jordy also has an online academy called JA Academy, where he teaches sewing tips, up-cycling projects, and garment creation. At MUMSTER, we find this quite impressive and innovative, as it gives individuals the opportunity to understand how garments are created.

“Gender rights are worker’s rights”.

Nearly three-quarters of garment workers worldwide are women, many of whom endure unfair treatment, including sexual, physical, and verbal violence. This issue not only affects women and girls but also impacts men from diverse gender orientations, such as those who are gay, transgender, or bisexual.

Unfortunately, these workers often cannot speak up for themselves because their jobs are their primary source of income, and in some cases, they are underpaid or even unpaid. This situation has led to the creation of organizations dedicated to protecting workers’ rights, regardless of gender.

Recently, new rules and regulations have been implemented by the EU, such as banning the sale of goods made under forced labor. This legislation will require manufacturers to provide declarations and reports ensuring they offer a safe working environment.

Cultural activities have been part of the fashion industry for many years, yet the indigenous people don’t get credit for their work and tradition.

Highlighting the few of cultural traditions used in the fashion industry:

1. Hand embroidery, a tradition that goes back thousands of years where traditional people used to use threads to decorate their clothes with, and show their heritage or social status. This tradition exists almost in all contents from Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. Each country has their own form of embroidery, related to their customs or spiritual believes. What is actually interesting that you can tell stories through embroidery. Embroidery can be a method of mending and repairing clothes.

2. Garment Weaving is a traditional textile process involving the interlacing of warp and weft threads to create fabric. This method allows for the production of various textiles with different patterns, textures, and strengths. It is the first process of creating fabrics to start any clothing production, or in some cultures this can be done to create carpets or accessories. For example the Persian culture is known for their carpets that till this day they hand weave them, to keep their heritage alive.

What culture tradition your country contributes in the fashion industry? 🧶

MUMSTER was born to set the example for the next generation.

Founder Chanel: ‘I can not imagine my kid is making clothes in bad conditions, but unfortunately child labor is still existing’ It declined by 30% between 2000 and 2012, but then the number of children in child labour rose by 8.4 million (reaching 160 million worldwide) within 4 years.

Sadly, cheap and unregulated child labour is especially still a thing in fast fashion because it helps keep the costs so low. At least 29.8 millions of people are kept in modern slavery conditions.

That’s why MUMSTER supports fashion pioneers who are transparent about their supply chains, prioritize fair working conditions, and create opportunities for people who face barriers to employment.

Cultural appropriation vs appreciation debate is a nuanced one in the fashion industry. Traditional diversity and cultural appreciation in fashion needs to be celebrated and honoured for the skills provided by the rich heritage behind every design.

One way to appreciate different cultures is by highlighting and showcasing their indigenous skills as pieces of art. Techniques such as hand embroidery, beading, and weaving can add immense value to the fashion industry. Instead of relying on machines, we can provide people with opportunities to work and share their craftsmanship with the world.

Chanel founder of MUMSTER is wearing a coat handmade in Peru, with locally sourced materials.
It is a collaboration between haute couture designer Ani Alvarez Calderon and an indigenous community, Shipobo Conibo, from the Amazon of Peru. (Once in pucalpa where this community lives, it is a 10 hour journey into the rainforest).

This collaboration is to preserve the art form Kene. Each piece takes 3 months to make. All characters have a meaning and are made during ceremonies. Making process: the shipibo make a work of art (kene art) on a large square. Sometimes with natural dyes such as mud, tree bark, etc.

This process is repeated (drying in the sun) until it does not ‘wash out’. The coat is hand embroidered, once finished they go to Lima. To the AAC studio. This lasting ready-to-wear collection is called Beneai. All items (wearable art) are one of a kind. Slow fashion at its finest.

“Fast fashion isn’t free. Someone, somewhere is paying” – Lucy Siegle, journalist

At the beginning of this decade, the fast fashion industry has experienced rapid growth. This has shifted the focus primarily to production, often at the expense of safety, human rights, and the quality of manufacturing processes.

In 2013, the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh collapsed, resulting in a tragic loss of over 1,100 lives and injuring more than 2,500 workers. This disaster highlighted the severe safety and labor violations in the fast fashion industry, sparking global outrage and demands for better working conditions and stricter regulations.

The fashion industry needs to take the human aspect of production not just the production outcome. As the people in manufactures work long hours with garments this requires them to be provided with safety equipments and a liveable salary in order to provide for their family. Around 2% of the workers in the fashion manufacturing industry are getting paid a liveable wage.

Can you share your thought about the injustice in the fast fashion industry?

This is why we are dedicated to accelerating change in the fashion industry. ✊🏻

Founder Chanel:
‘The moment I watched the documentary The True Cost and the woman with her son underneath her sewing table in a clothing factory, I was shocked. That woman with her child could have been me. From that moment, I was dedicated to find the pioneers that are working to change this human and planet exploiting fashion system.
That’s when MUMSTER was born.’

We couldn’t be more happy with these words! 🙌

In 2023, Joline and her partner decided to move to a farm in Welsum, Overijssel. For them, the perfect place to take the next step. They dreamed of a regenerative Fashion Farm where people can see how the clothing is made from natural raw materials that they grow themselves. Therefore they have to renovate the chicken barn to let their dream come true. 🌾

To make it a reality, Joline Jolink set up a successful crowdfunding campaign. MUMSTER made the crowdfunding video to help reach their goal. We are very proud of Joline Jolink and her team for achieving €146.419 in time. We can’t wait for the renovated farm to open the door to its first visitors.

20/02/2024

Today, on International Day of Social Justice, we're reflecting on the crucial role of the sustainable fashion industry in fostering social justice worldwide. As we contemplate this year's theme, which underscores the pressing need to address inequalities and uphold workers' rights, it's clear that sustainable fashion holds immense potential for positive change.

In our industry, we have the power to reinforce the social contract by prioritizing fair labor practices, empowering workers, and fostering inclusivity across the supply chain. From ensuring fair wages to championing diversity, we can drive meaningful progress towards a more just and equitable world.

We are very proud to spotlight inspiring socially responsible pioneers, who deserve the stage for the amazing mission they hold with:

✨️ .earth - An advocacy organization comprised of individuals challenging governments and corporations to prioritize the health of our communities, environment, and climate. They tirelessly advocate for respect towards people and the environment, because our lives depend on it!

✨️ - A unique brand crafting upcycled, kite-sourced, fair trade bags. Their mission extends beyond creating products; they aim to provide survivors of prostitution and human trafficking with a safe and nurturing workspace. A safe and respectful working environment, combined with their love for kitesurfing.

✨️ - An international alliance of labor rights organizations and trade unions that works to improve working conditions in the global garment industry. They advocate for fair wages, safe factories, and the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively.

Let's celebrate these changemakers and reaffirm our commitment to advancing social justice in fashion and beyond. Together, we can build a brighter and more equitable future for all!

Do you know more brands or organisations who deserve this spotlight? Tag them in the comments!

📣Dive into the latest insights in the industry! We've stumbled upon three incredible articles that we're thrilled to share with you!

1. Martin HĂśfeler from shared insights on the future of fashion and the importance of sustainability in an interview for .We find this article particularly inspiring as it's a testament to the growing awareness and commitment towards eco-friendly practices in the fashion industry. We believe in amplifying the voices of brands like ARMEDANGELS, which are leading the charge for positive change. Let's continue to support and promote sustainable fashion initiatives together!

2. On Monday, Feb 12th, .earth lodged a complaint with Canada’s greenwashing regulator, alleging that misleads customers with claims of planet-friendly products, despite its escalating climate pollution.Lululemon portrays itself as environmentally conscious, but recent reports reveal a stark contrast. Visit .earth for details on the greenwashing complaint filed with the Bureau of Anti-competition. At MUMSTER, we champion transparency in fashion and urge for clear messaging on environmental practices. Join us in spreading the word!

3. also delves into the concept of True Pricing in their article "The Hidden Costs of Our Purchases." This piece reveals the hidden environmental and social impacts of consumer goods. We're captivated by the potential of True Pricing to promote transparency and sustainability in the fashion industry. By understanding the real price of products, consumers can make more informed choices, while ethical businesses are incentivized to thrive. True Pricing in the fashion industry means a shift towards more conscious consumption, where the environmental and social costs of clothing are accounted for. We encourage you to support efforts that empower consumers and drive sustainability forward!

🌍✨ Shining a spotlight on one of our cherished partners – 🌟
Their innovative Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool is a game-changer in the realm of sustainable and ethical fashion.

LCA, or Life Cycle Analysis, is their methodological magic, delving into the environmental impacts of products from production to the end stage, covering carbon footprint, water usage, and transport.

True Cost Label's Impact Profile goes beyond the surface, giving consumers a clear view of their product's impact on our planet and its people. 🌎💚 This digital platform simplifies the complexities of sustainable fashion data, empowering consumers to make informed choices that align with values of less pollution and fair work conditions across the industry.

Specializing in the fashion sector, dissects every aspect of a product at the component level. From the raw materials to the final product, every kilogram and production process is scrutinized. The result? A comprehensive view of environmental and social impacts, bringing transparency to the supply chain.

But it doesn't stop there – True Cost Label adds another layer of clarity by tracking the entire transportation route of a product. This means you get the true cost, not just in terms of dollars, but also in the kilometres a product has travelled.

That’s why our inspiring client .bags a timeless vegan handbag brand based in Amsterdam, decided to put their animal-free handbags to the test – a life cycle analysis to be exact – to find out how the leather alternative products, including the new collection ‘PAM’, perform on the impartial impact scale.

Curious about the results? Check the full report in the link in our stories!
